There are 8 merits from special ammo.
1. Surplus- use 100 rounds of special ammo(SA)
2. Bandolier- use 1,000 round SA
3. Quartermaster- use 10,000 rounds SA
4. Maimed- use 2,500 Hollow Point rounds
5. Scorched- use 2,500 incendiary rounds
6. Marked- use 2,500 tracer rounds
7. Penetrated- use 2,500 piercing rounds
8. Dragon's Breath- use 1 incendiary round with shotgun

Special ammo comes in bundles of 10, 250, and 500 in mission points market. The following list is still in progress.

12 gauge = 250 shells
.25 cal = 500 rounds
.380 cal = 250 rounds
.44 cal = 250 rounds
.45 cal = 500 rounds
5.45mm = 500 rounds
5.56mm = 500 rounds
5.7mm = 500 rounds
7.62mm = 500 rounds
9mm = 500 rounds
RPG = 10 (Piercing & incendiary only)
Warheads = 10 warheads (Piercing & incendiary only)
(If you see what other calibers offer when they show up for you, post in comments please. )

Ammo that shows up is determined by the firearms, primary and secondary, that are equipped. Having no firearm equipped will result in random calibers showing up.

Wait till you see them on "special" save hundreds of mission points, other than books, wait till its on special. Save mission points for piggy bank, books, mods, and special ammo. All other items can be bought with money.

There is a stonk, BAG, that pays out special ammo every 7 days. There are also company specials that give special ammo.

Hope this helps

I would like to add that if you want to target a specific ammo for a particular gun type in mission rewards in the case of Dragon's Breath, you could unequip your secondary and only have a shotgun to increase the chance of it appearing as it only populates for guns you have currently equipped.
