What are your thoughts on mandatory voting? Mandatory voting creates donkey votes, etc. Just a place for people to discuss.

Dumb idea, should fix the 2 party system instead so people want to vote. Rather than force them to choose between terrible choices.

Always by time general election comes, options are narrowed down where feel not worth it. Pointless when know voting won’t matter.

Also feel voting for someone gives implied consent to what they’re going to do; with candidates I would support never being an option.

My guess is that nobody wants that, neither it's really a topic in any country.

Everybody should be able to vote if they want though.

For one, should get rid of special privilege the main 2 parties have in our system; where they pretty much decide the options. Some Libertarians think if they get a certain percentage they’ll be taken more seriously in future elections, but think that is BS & as soon as a candidate admits getting some small percentage is their aim so maybe they’ll get gov funding like democrats & republicans do for future elections rather than winning; they throw the election & most don’t care about that.

Ranked voting's not such a crazy idea..? They do it in Australia and Ireland. We'd just need to have, you know, more than two options...

I don't know how to get more voter participation, but I don't support mandatory voting. We need more participation because we need to break out of the 2-party system here in the States.

If there was a candidate out there that could appeal to both the left and the right that didn't have super fringe ideas, I'm sure they'd get the vote.

an option I've used in Canada is to write "declined ballot" and submit. My way of saying all the local candidates are not deserving. I did so after having a Q&A with each of the candidates in the lead up, asking basic questions about germane topics to the community.

Oh. Fair. Sometimes I just get excited when I figure out which direction the train of thought has derailed to

Since already a thread on voting, might as well just post this here. According to democrats, verifying who is voting by mail and them needing to request a mail in ballot is racist I guess; like they don't think people of color are able to get a state license or something. lol

Voting: Florida Legislature passes elections bill that adds restrictions - CNNPolitics

"This bill is just a vindictive way of trying to punish people for an election that some people just didn't like at the national level," said state Sen. Audrey Gibson, a Democrat, during one of several emotional debates over the legislation this week.

Several of the most restrictive measures originally in the bill were watered down, but Democrats pointed out that what remains will likely have the greatest impact on low-income and older voters, voters of color and those with disabilities.

"I think it will target people of color. It will affect them," Democratic state Sen. Randolph Bracy told CNN.

"SB 90 is a blatant violation of Floridians' freedom to vote and represents a direct backlash to last year's record-breaking turnout," said Florida State Director for All Voting is Local Brad Ashwell in a statement after the bill passed the House on Thursday night. "By erecting onerous barriers to request and return a vote-by-mail ballot, this legislature has made voting a test of stamina and resources rather than a statement of civic responsibility."
People who want to vote by mail now must request ballots every election cycle, instead of every two cycles. An eleventh-hour agreement between the two chambers did grandfather in those voters who are already on the request list through the 2022 election.
Another measure of SB 90 that critics say will disproportionately impact low-income voters and voters of color is stricter limits on who can pick up and return a voter's ballot on their behalf. The bill says a person can be in possession only of their own ballot, a ballot of their immediate family member and two others per election cycle. Immediate family does include grandchildren, but not other extended family members or caretakers.

Under SB 90, Floridians will be required to provide their Florida driver's licenses, state identification numbers or the last four digits of their Social Security numbers when requesting mail-in ballots, changing their party affiliations or names.
Do they really think people of color can't get ID, it's specifically targeting people of color for them to need to want to vote rather than someone else just doing it on their behalf who isn't even related to them? lol

Seems like Democrats are betting hard on just being able to fill in mail in ballots on behalf of people not motivated to vote & calling any measure to make sure mail in ballot vote is actually being made at the will of the person. If they don't think colored people have access to ID, they have more problems than just voting. Considering you need ID for a ton of stuff. lol. They also feel like they're somehow being punished because there is some verification process a vote is actually being cast on behalf a person who wants to. Almost feel it's racist that they imply colored people don't know how to get an ID & lack the stamina to request a mail in ballot if they want to vote; but don't want to do it in person. Seems like they're mostly upset they can't just send in mail in ballots on behalf of a bunch of random people. That they're so up in arms about his makes one wonder how much they utilized the tactic previous election to send mail in ballots on behalf of people not even motivated to vote. If someone doesn't have a driver license, state ID, or social security; they have problems well beyond voting.

Feel like they should be arguing any laws requiring people to show ID to buy alcohol, ciggs or prescription drugs are racist as well on the same logic, yet only care about it on voting. (ID to drive, buy a gun, etc, should also count as racist on same train of though)
Phil-I-P [2035498]
If the IDs are quick, free, and easy to obtain then there are no real issues with requiring an ID to vote (UK is based on a unique National Insurance number, iirc). Anything else is a barrier to entry for voting. The difference between voting and buying beer is that everybody having an equal vote is essential for democracy to work. Or so it is theorised, anyway
