How often should I be checking the map for items? I have 2 merit points in Awareness, so how much does that effect my chances? Check once a day?

They can appear once a day when it hits 24:00:00
Items have a chance to spawn every day at midnight, so checking any more often than once a day isn't going to do anything. Certain items can spawn throughout the day during certain events though, for example green stout during st paddy's

You will go days without any new spawns, so you might wanna check once a week (or even once a month later on in your Torn career).
Once spawned, the items will stay on the map until collected by you.

Not too sure about those event drops like love potions etc, but the others that spawn daily wont despawn, so it's up to you to decide how often do you check.
