A % probability that a virus gets consumed would be nice to make things worthwhile.
Do you still program viruses?

Better question... Why wouldn't you? It takes like 2 clicks.

It will take 20 more days before it is completed.

Um zero?
The virus doesn't get consumed when you use it. You can use it over and over.

The % probability would simulate security researchers developing detection/defense for a particular virus. While there's nothing to stop viruses from being used, you'll find that viruses from 15 years ago don't really work anymore. So likewise, you should be able to use a virus in TORN at least a few times before it gets "discovered" and "patched." A % probability (could be different for each virus type) makes sense.
Could also have two categories of viruses, "Zero Days" that are fully effective, that have a chance of downgrading to a "Lesser" quality, rather than being consumed entirely, and those lesser variants have a significantly reduced but nonzero chance of success (because some people don't update their systems).
So lets say:
"Zero Day Simple Virus" has 95% effective rate and on use a 25% chance to downgrade to a "Lesser Simple Virus," which has, say, 35% chance of success.
Pulling numbers out of my ass here, but I imagine it could be balanced for each virus type to create a demand for new virus production.
Or make an entire "quality" tiering system of viruses: "Zero Day" > "New" > "Discovered" > "Patched" > "Old" with decreasing effectiveness, AND when you manufacture new viruses, you have differing chances of producing different "qualities" of virus.
Right now an entire section of the inventory is devoted to viruses and there are only a small handful of types. This would be an interesting expansion, in my opinion. Anyway, I should probably post this in suggestions or something lol.

Wow... None of that applies in torn dude. This is a game, not real life.

Aren't you a cheery one? lol.
4000$ extra per week, of course!

this thread reminded me to hack, ty
And tie it to having to do logic puzzles every day you're creating the virus.

I try to remember to keep those going all the time. Very small profit involved, but very little effort so why not.

Completely forgotten about that! Thanks for reminding me of this..
Crime 2.0 is a myth
I recently got the 100 viruses merit and thought about stopping, but then decided even if there's the tiniest chance new merits get brought in later for programming larger numbers of viruses, I might as well keep going.
Ched already denied any suggestions the last time we had them virus related where if i recall correctly he said either give some good suggestions only then we'll have a chat about it else nope. we're not lookin into it right now.
Funny thing was the whole post had shittons of actual good suggestions.
prolly they got something coming up in crimes 2.0
but if not , that'd be sad.
Viruses are the road less travelled in torn and I'd really love to see them get more usage than a merit.
I remember suggesting something like *hacking bank account of people using viruses*.
I'm not giving details since this isn't really a suggestions post but ye :"(

Not really lol. Kinda forgot they were a thing.
I still code them but every now and then I forget and without the event reminder sometimes they stay forgotten for awhile
I still program them - for the merit ofcourse.
What I think how it should work is that IF you fail a crime that you used the virus for - then the virus should be consumed. This way they atleast would build/hold some sort of value.
tbh its kinda the same with other crimes that use some sort of "item" to do the crime ( for example blank credit cards )
But this is another topic for another time.

Yeh, I still do Armored, not sure why.. but for next to zero effort, why not. Two clicks every 20-some days, done.
