I didn’t see this discussion happening recently. Though i came back from inactivity after a year, the motive that brought me back was my past commitment.
i know that ched must have built a foolproof way to save all of our progress to eternity (SpaceTorn - a 2050 venture to build a torn server on mars or moon), but still this question comes to my mind at least once a month.
And i know there are people who wish for that to happen (obviously for a merit).
the major discussion part here is,
1) Are you willing to restart along with so many new players (do you dare)?
2) do you think that it would bring more new players into the game with less attrition?
3)how long would it take for you to reach your present state from scratch?
4)is it possible to attain same amount of money in this game if the mechanics remain same (some people say the oldies wouldn’t have been able to rake up such money if for not the old mechanics)?
5)nobody would be willing to restart, but if ched promises you one new feature which can make you ready for the gamble?
and please post some memes if possible. Don’t forget to vote the pole.
tbh i think that most people have just accumulated so much that they would likely stop playing if there was a reset. would probably create a more competitive environment though. personally though it would be fun to reset and have a bunch of people try to speedrun up the totem pole, without the ability to sell losses or even really run plushies until later.
No Doing the sleepless nights and long hours of travelling and flipping items to get where I am now, all over again? Nah, m8 I could pull that off coz I had lock down. Now no more lock down and I gotta do my rl bizz too..No I don't want any reset.
But you can't just up and do that after like 17 years, because a ton of your players will just quit.
This is why competent game designers build in something like this from the start. It's either that or hard caps. You'd have to be a complete moron to allow almost unlimited exponential growth in a game, with no cap or season or prestiege or reset mechanic. And yet here we are....
I would hate to start over, and I'm not even an old player. I know that a lot of the ones my age and older would just quit. But I also agree that it would light a competitive fire in this game in an incredible way. A lot of the current toxic relationships are based heavily on power differentials and long, uninterrupted histories. Wipe that clean, wipe the forums, let everyone change names, and turn them back loose. If the landscape of Torn isn't vastly different, I would be completely shocked.
I love having BodyBagger in the faction, not only is he one of the stronges players in the game, he's a real nice guy. But he doesn't have to do a lot anymore, so he doesn't. If Torn got reset, would we have him in the faction? At his current level of activity, probably not. So the question becomes whether or not he can dive back in with the insanely high creativity, dedication, and effort that catapulted him to the top of the game?
Most likely yeah, if they brought out a new sever i would play both. Like another game they rolled back the game about 5 years of updates and started a sever along side the main game and i enjoyed playing both.
Yeah, no. Been playing this game close to 4 years, or about 1/5th of my LIFE may I mention that my love for it remains almost as strong as when I first started.
This is really the only game of mine I have regularly played every day since I saw its ad. None have done that. I have more game time here than on all my steam games combined.
Do you really want to take away the sense of passive growth for so many people like myself? I admit, I'm not even close to a hard-core player, but even I realize the idiocy of a reset.
Edit: that's actually why this game has survived so long, is because torn doesn't reset and it's a game you can play for life. I plan to play until I'm six feet under so yeah.
New accounts should not have a say on this. The competition would be fun, sure, whatever. But I've been at this game more or less everyday for 14 years. The second that commitment would not be respected for myself and other old timers by doing a reset would be the last second I'd ever spend on this site.
I would still play if there was a reset, but any fool who thinks the game would work the same has probably not actually played Torn. The community is what makes the game, not the mechanics. Shred the community to pieces in that way and I doubt any of us here would recognize the new Torn aside from the visual layout. Enough people would leave that it wouldn't be worth keeping the game alive, either.
