During a fight, you can reload until you run out of clips. I recommend buying plenty of ammo, so you're more than prepared. If you run out of ammo/clips in your fight, you'll have to switch to whatever else you have equipped to finish.
Over time, once you do missions and earn credits, you can buy mods for extended magazines, extra magazines, etc.

As long as the right kind of ammo is in your ammunition inventory, you can reload your guns in battle if you ran out. Your guns automatically reload to full magazine after every battle.
