There are several different types of hackathon. Coders have hackathons, hackers have CTFs (capture the flag). Those re the ones I've done. Many are for students, but there are a few you don't need to be. If you're interested in the hacking ones, check out Hack the Box and Try Hack Me. They're great for beginners and experienced hackers, but also teach a lot of things that aren't necessarily hacking.
