These words are commonly confused, even by native English speakers:

YOUR vs YOU’RE

THEIR vs THEY’RE

In each example, the first word is a possessive pronoun. “That is YOUR jacket. They live in THEIR apartment.”

The second word is a contraction. A contraction shortens the phrase “you are” or “they are.” Replace the “a” in “are” with an apostrophe.

Apply this rule and decide which is correct:

(a) THEY’RE DINNER WAS TASTY or (b) THEIR DINNER WAS TASTY

(a) I AM SURPRISED THAT YOUR GOING or (b) I AM SURPRISED THAT YOU’RE GOING
