Honestly sounds like both need looking into.

Classified Materials should be "on a need to know basis" not just anyone with clearance who wants to have a peek.

do you have a source on that? the images i saw were in a presentation format, like a powerpoint was printed off, folded and put into his pocket, and then taken out later and photographed before being uploaded to discord

would seem like a helluva lot of professional effort for his braggart shitpost to rewrite it all from scratch

It was the BBC yesterday, but looks like they have corrected their article, so I’m guessing it’s not true.

So yeah if he was able to take documents out that’s a massive problem.
Lenin [2199004]
one of these damn articles i read (probably cbc) theorized that he never left whatever building with the images, but rather perhaps snuck off to another room with them in his pocket and snapped the photos quickly before returning the documents

all in all seems pretty sloppy. guess he liked the thrill of keeping possession of something he wasn't allowed to have.

probably gunna end up in a solitary concrete box for the next 40 years. i wonder if dunking on some guy on discord was worth it, lol

i said before that i basically think it's all a cia psyop but i can definitely believe it's an internet-poisoned hot-headed 21 year old. that does scan

Yup, I was in the it’s a intentional leak camp until I saw who they arrested over it.

It being a 21 year old JR makes the US look stupid, and like you say I wouldn’t put it past a 21 year old to break the official secrets act to dunk on someone on discord.

so if the dude was trans, would it be an argument against trans people in the military by that ridiculous logic?
WhackedMaki [2587660]
Didn't say that. But it is to show that maybe, just maybe, it's not being trans that's the problem. You also know 100% that if he were trans we'd already have Republicans up in arms about it

If reports of him being an IT person are to be believed, we probably have a case of "who watches the watchmen?" on our hands. Those guys have an enormous amount of access due to the nature of their jobs.

Also need to keep in mind that what was leaked wasn't all that secret in the grand scheme of things. This brief is basically a glorified newsletter and is a very routine product.

I do wonder if we'll see this be an execution. It's technically a legal punishment for high treason. It would be the first in quite a long time.

alot of the images he took were taken at home, the FBI Matched the images taken the background matched his kitchen countertops
Johnox [66901]
i get that but these leaks seem to happen often, if this is the case they need to start doubling people up, so they have to watch each other. and both are held accountable for the others actions if they neglect to do their jobs.

Atleast in the first few years of their career untill they actually prove to be trusted

That's just not a practical solution though. Two person integrity is already a requirement for crypto (not the money laundering type) and that is a royal pain in the ass to manage. Absolutely no way you could apply that standard at scale especially when you consider that this type of information isn't controllable like COMSEC is.

To me it sounds like this wasn't an issue of current checks and balances being inadequate, but a failure to follow the existing checks and balances. How the heck was he allowed to print documents and leave with them? Some of the facilities I was at when I was in the ARMY required me to swipe my ID badge in order to use the printer, and it would log anything and everything I printed. I couldn't leave the facility until I turned in all documents that I printed, and it was matched against the system logs. Not to mention you were in for a fun time if you misplaced a document, found with a document not listed on the log, or found to have printed something you had no business looking at.

If my experience as a staff officer for my shore tour is any indicator it's that your experience was the exception rather than the norm. How do you actually get work done with that level of administrative burden? That's just nuts.
Mathematics [1631069]
Can't say for sure if my experience is typical, and it may have had more strict protocols that were in place given the material being handled.

As far as getting work done, it sounds worse than it was. Only really noticed it when it came to leaving the facility.
