"What is Juneteenth?" You might ask if outside the US.
After the Civil War, all slaves were officially freed, but many slaveholders refused to release them and it took US troops moving throughout the former rebel states to enforce.
On June 19th, 1865 Major General Gordon Granger proclaimed freedom for all enslaved people in the state of Texas, beginning enforcement of the Emancipation Proclamation.
Since then, June 19th has been observed as the final official end of slavery in the United States. In 2021 it was recognized as a federal holiday.
Today we can celebrate America's second Independence Day when the rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness were no longer denied to a whole race of people.

Sometimes they end up in situations where the answer is yes, but usually no, because they have their freedom. Our slaves fight wildfires in California.
Maybe we'll have a third independence day when the constitution no longer allows exceptions for slavery.
