I always wanted to go to defcon :) herd about it long time ago.
I've been following this before (stuff happened), tried a few of those online hackathons or two for kicks (obviously was pants haha).
Just wondering, would you think TryHackMe and/or HackTheBox (or maybe one is better than the other(?)) is good to get into? I'm not really in the cybersec field but years ago was an enthusiast. Mostly read ebooks, but never tried the onilne resources which I think should get me up to speed better.

CTFs and wargames like those are good fun.
Hack the box would be a good place to start, but you're right - the online resources will help you much more first
By way of CTFs, I highly recommend OverTheWire for those just starting out.
