Honest question, not bashing the game, and to preface - I used to play text based MUDs back in my university days, I'm 51 years old, I've been around :)

I really want to like this game, but it just feels like a pointless grind that's heavily restricted by energy and nerve. When does it actually become anything more than just boosting stats and waiting?

There are much more things to do than simply training your stats. Torn is game where you make your own fun, whether this be through trading, racing, warring or just interacting with other people. You need to find something that interests you and stick to it, then it will get fun.

If it wasn't for the people you can just play cookieclicker. Join a large and active faction and interact with people who are on the same road as you are.

To echo what others have said, it's the people who make this game what it is. There are tons of factions in this game for every style of play. See what you can find and hang out with people. For some it's just a button go up simulator, where watching your stats and crimes get higher is the reward. For some it's purely social, and they barely train. Some people play to be the best and they enjoy learning every aspect of the game and maximizing their time. The fun is what you make of it.

For me building stats and training etc...Game mechanics is something to do while i'm pursuing goals I make for myself and chat with faction and friends about random things to pass the time.

Remember all those games you played for months long after it stopped being fun just because of the cool people you met and played with? That is Torn. Only in this game the stuff you do can be as little or great a level of time commitment as you like. So even if Torn itself stops being fun. You can still hang out with your friends and help them have fun with very little effort on your part if your at a place where you cant or no longer choose to be very active. If you played a game like WoW for example. If you no longer had fun playing, you really couldn't hang out with the gang so much without a major time commitment doing stuff that you don't like for the sake of your friends. In Torn you can still hang...just more in hospital than the walls...

Not every game is for everyone. If you aren't having fun learning it and seeing the progression now, Torn only gets slower from here. The game is a long grind, and it may simply not be your type of game.

Feel free to reach out with any questions though, would be happy to answer if you want to stick around.

Join a faction that's newbie friendly but also has experienced leadership and has decent respect. Be active in the faction chat and see how it goes. If the vibe's not quite right, you can always try another faction. I was fortunate to start Torn with a supportive and friendly faction, and it made a big difference in my enjoyment of the game and my growth as a player. :)

The Faction Recruitment forum is a decent starting place.

You can also be a reviver and make money if that type of play interests you. There are many good revive factions.

It's a sandbox game. Theres no clear end or winner. You can grind achievements and troll people. Tbh The real challenge is trying to make money.

First, when you figure out what your drive is, networth, attacking, mugging, reviving, leading a faction, running a company, being a forum troll etc.

Second, when you start to build relationships with other players, even enemies, is when the game starts to truly shine. You can enjoy bantering with someone that attacks you, you can enjoy helping newbs, you can enjoy making friends in global chat etc.

It's up to you, your goal and what you enjoy. If you can't find joy in any of the above suggestions then perhaps another game would be more fun.

Torn is an MMO game so socializing with people is something thats encouraged and rewarded as you get more connections. For me though its making money and seeing my things go up because of my effort >:)

When the crimes get fully released and you can actually make money with crimes.

Right now I’m level 75 and can barely bring home 100k in crimes. This is actually demoralizing.

Trust me I’m right here with you BUT! The game was fun… when I had tools to accomplish my self imposed goals. Now? Nah.

It's not about fun it's about scratching the progression Itch that Runescape cursed me with as a young boy
