stealth virus takes 100 days without bonuses to write. they sell to npc at 200,000.

if these viruses were to be implemented into a crime (a new one) wouldnt demand far outweigh supply and lead to a massive price hike?

and surely the devs would give these viruses more of a use in crimes 2.0, and with their long time period to write and high npc sell value the reward of a crime using these must be extremely high.

for that reason, something like 20% of my nw has gone into these items. am i crazy?

Ched'll probably make them buyable at the start, as he did with the other crimes

Might also change the production rate, or have virii be boosters or multi-use consumables (like with spray cans)

My guess on this is that the all the viruses will act more like enhancers. They're not physical, and since CPUs and stuff hit the market, there is a category of destructible items for the computer crimes to consume.

Or maybe it'll just be like the blue face masks, and they'll be added to a store.

Either way, it would be very unlikely you have thought about this before Ched did.

well looking at npc sell rate, even if they are added to a shop they will still have a value above 200,000 (the npc sell price) its possible they are made attainable through unique outcomes though?, i hope they dont become a stat enhancer and i think its less likely since we already have multiple tech crime enhancers

Previous comments by ched indicates he wants to entirely remove viruses from the game. Honestly wouldnt be surprised if they have little to no use in the future. Any playstyle that doesnt invovled fighting seems to be unfavorable to him.
Taxxon [882264]
I believe many aspects are in the game solely for balancing purposes, like revives. Cheds openly stated he doesnt care for the playstyle and Id assume viruses fall into that category of not wanting but serving as some form a game balance.

Regardless how many things and uses they add to viruses doesnt really change the opinion that if they were removed I wouldn't be surprised.

Firewalk viruses were subject of a committee leak way back in the day and I believe were orginally meant to be programmable until that happened.
JohnMcafee [3003579]
interesting, i had no idea they were meant to be programmable. all i know is what ive discussed with bogie, who said the only way to attain them (before being added as programmable) was through missions. either way i think its important for ched to provide multiple avenues of playstyle through features like revives and auctioning and crimes as it keeps the game's span of appeal broader. im glad we arent stuck with the "meta" of just training in between wars, jumping straight back into war and so on non stop.

the entire reason i am playing this game is because there is margin for creativity in how you play, freedom to pursue different roles in torn other than mercenary wardog (even if it is still the meta). for these reasons i believe, in my opinion ched should make crimes 2.0 very interactive and diverse through such items as viruses (computer hacker / burglar and so on). it would be interesting if ched could make these crimes affect other torn players or torn in general. one example might be reducing stock of candy shop or bitsnbobs when you shoplift, or one really interesting idea i read was about the potential application of viruses where they could be used to target player owned companies.

i believe having an interdependent ecosystem for the game will lead to more niches being filled and the viability of non meta playstyles. what i mean by an interdependent ecosystem is the need to outsource stuff to other real players, and companies help alot with this ( using points to do cool stuff like extend a players flight time and so on) this interdependence, as it stands now is not too great. aside from revives and occasional bounty reveal there isnt much with good application in most scenarios, extending flight time is has a very rare and opportunistic use case, a member of 39th told me how they used it to win a war by delaying a large players flight time making the faction helpless (do not remember the details well) in any case i think building more non meta, smaller economies (example revives) make the game far more interesting, and ched could do this by adding new company types, making companies vulnerable to players with high computer science edu and creating a market for hackers and cyber security firms. and this could be applied in most areas. perhaps applications with general knowledge edu (aside from unlocking driving crimes) or maybe a chemistry edu unlocking drug development, the speed could be based on scientific skill?? and create demand for precursor chemicals wich could be accumulated as a bi product of owning a mining corporation.

sorry i went a TINY bit off topic, i just got taken away in a bit of a rant. but i think its important ched diversifies and focuses on increasing the number of playstyles that can actually compete with the current meta of being a wardog who just trains non stop, leading to broader appeal and higher player retention so on so on, metrics and crap. point is the game would be more fun and generate more cash lol.

Unless I am having a stroke they have always been programmable? Or at least were for quite some time? I remember them taking 120 days to program. If that number is correct, it means they were at some point in the past.

04:28:53 - 30/08/23 You started programming a firewalk virus which will take 42 days to complete

So they are/have been programmable.

I do have some time reductions for programming so am not sure what the starting number of days are.
damaster [641864] Wiki Contributor
Yes that seems right with reductions. These for sure have been programmable for some time. I think Bogie probably made a mistake here, he doesn't know *every* faucet of the game especially obscure stuff like this.

I think there was a time, years ago, that they could not be programmed and had to be purchased with a merit. There was never a point they were obtained through missions, the sole purpose the fiewalk virus has ever had is that it used to be *consumed* by a mission.
Aezur [1950769]
They've definitely been programable since I started playing. I wanted to be hackerman when I started so got very into all the virus stuff. The little of it that there is. I've only made 3 though.

03:25:25 - 10/09/21 You completed the programming of a firewalk virus

03:25:19 - 03/12/21 You completed the programming of a firewalk virus

03:25:25 - 25/02/22 You completed the programming of a firewalk virus

The timestamps are kinda interesting. I guess it gets done in a routine per day, not X hours after you start.

Ched has been very specific that he does not like the price gouging from limited crime consumables. If viruses are required he will ensure the supply outweights the demand as with all the other items so far.

So in answer to your question, if you hold them til a virus crime is released you will likely lose most of that that 20%.

(Luckily that is under 50mil so you can earn it back in no time)
