You get plenty of benefit from overclocking with a single chassis, mostly in the sense that by overclocking you can get additional cooling installed (ideally water blocks or heat sinks) while keeping power use the same.

Think the best zero-heat 150% overclock single-chassis rig has 750k MIPS, while non-overclocked gets maxed at around 550k.
There's a bunch of layouts in this thread and the cracking rigs thread that you may wanna look into. An update to this guide including some layouts is pending (most of them come from Reshula and Fetheryhorse6, with a few others I wanna nick from the rigs thread) but the ones currently posted should be pretty okay.

Some people may wonder: "Why is it taking you so long to update this?" A few reasons,
- Got an accounting gig temporarily while job hunting which is taking plenty of my time during the week.
- Got a job interview lined up next month so gotta prepare for that as well.
- I'm lazy ~_~ and have been sleeping 12hrs a day for the past few weeks.

Will try and push an update during the weekend!

Well... this is annoying.

Was working on pushing the update today, realized it was 3AM and tried to push a partial update when this showed up.
Will look into trimming a bit then re-attempt the update tomorrow, I was aware that the guide was pretty long but not "you cannot post something this long" long.

As L4 says above we can pin additional details for tutorial threads if you make a new post. :) Simply make the post, report it requesting it be pinned.

We don't do that for any old requests, but where its a useful addendum to a guide or list for example we will typically review it and do that.

I was thinking something like:

"Pinned post" > "Crimes 2.0 Guides"

Then have it link the different guides.

"Shoplifting"
[link 1]
[link 2]

"Bootlegging"
[link 1]
[link 2]

ect ect

I don't have enough nerve, sitting at 124 nerve bar with perks all in, 75 NNB. I want to do most of my disposal crimes each day to work towards the merit for illicit services. Currently level 72 in cracking. Done all other crimes. Since these triple encryption showed up it is very difficult to get my busts, all of cracking and all of disposal finished. I am currently mostly doing abandons on disposal, and having good success which saves some nerve. But I don't think I will get all the cracking done today.

What is the best overall approach. Should I do the triple and double cracking or concentrate on the easier cracking. I think the double and triple pay better, is that right?

Any comments appreciated.
Emforus [2535044] Wiki Contributor
Cracking is always better than bruteforcing in terms of nerve efficiency - if you're struggling with nerve, then doing easier targets and cracking them with 1-3 bruteforcing attempts is significantly more efficient than aiming for the 2-3 encryption jobs that need 4+ bruteforcing attempts. The more full cracks you get every day, the better.

More advanced targets do pay better but the nerve expenditure is also very high, the full list of jobs archived so far can be found here. Some targeted services pay more than others for the same target (Crime Syndicates being a very good representation of this) so if your goal is cash over progression then only doing the jobs with valuable targeted services may be worth looking into.

Sidenote: Read bogie's response, looking into making a separate post for the recommended rigs section and getting that pinned :P hope that helps with readability as well!

RECOMMENDED RIG LAYOUTS
Added this section as a separate post due to size limits on the original post.
All layouts used in this section, old and current, can be found here.
There's rigs for each use case, some for the folk that just want as much performance as possible while keeping heat as low as possible, and those that would rather have something that never heats up, and everything in-between. The following is a collection of layouts that were deemed "the best" in their respective categories, based on the tags attached to them. If you find any improvements in the listed chassis feel free to post them!

In case none of the listed chassis fit your needs in terms of uses before overheating or overclocking access, I strongly suggest checking the cracking rigs thread, where a library of rig designs that may fit your particular needs can be found.

For the sake of not making this guide even longer than it needs to be, only a few select layouts will be posted in this section. I suggest checking either the thread or the full archive posted above for other alternative designs.
Most layouts here were sent to me by Reshula [2644462], so assume the author is them unless stated otherwise.

DISCLAIMER: All heat categorization is assuming you have the education course for heat reduction. Your results may differ if you don't have it yet.

ZERO-HEAT LAYOUTS
Thermally stable layouts that can be used multiple times without critical components gaining heat.

TAGS: Single-chassis | Pre-OC | Zero-Heat | Budget
(Original design by Tiksu, Zuko49, Beesus, et al.)
Simulator link
One of if not the best budget zero-heat rigs. The price is very low and the parts are easy to get, with a fairly good performance. Arguably the best layout for folk just starting with their rigs
Requires:
- PSU x1
- CPU x2
- eCPU x19
- Computer Fan x2

TAGS: Single-chassis | Pre-OC | Zero-Heat
Simulator link
A very solid rig before overclocking comes into play. The price tag may be a bit high considering it requires five HPCPUs and four water blocks, but the performance is nothing to scoff at.
Requires:
- PSU x2
- CPU x 8
- eCPU x 4
- HPCPU x5
- Water Block x4

TAGS: Single-chassis | Post-OC | Zero-Heat
(Original design by Bug [1455582])
Simulator link
A great rig all around, no heat gain by critical components and uses all power available. The layout for the cooling components is so good that pretty much most other layouts you'll find in this section will be using that. Still, very expensive and one of the main reasons for the spike in price for HPCPUs.
Requires:
- PSU x3
- HPCPU x10
- Water Block x4
- Heat Sink x5

TAGS: Double-chassis | Post-OC | Zero-Heat
Simulator Link
A very strong double-chassis rig with a price tag to match. Very few rigs come close to this one in performance, if keeping heat zero is the goal. Does need a LOT of HPCPUs, 20 to be precise, making it very expensive to assemble if you don't already have the parts for it.
Requires:
- PSU x7
- eCPU x3
- HPCPU x20
- Water Block x8
- Heat Sink x5

TAGS: Triple-chassis | Post-OC | Zero-Heat
Simulator link
A tried and tested design, heat remains low as ever, and the price increases even further, as does the performance.
Requires:
- PSU x10
- CPU x1
- eCPU x2
- HPCPU x32
- Computer Fan x2
- Water Block x8
- Heat Sink x10

LOW-HEAT LAYOUTS
Layouts with minor heat generation, can be used more than ten times before overheating becomes an issue

TAGS: Single-chassis | Pre-OC | Low-Heat | Budget
(Posted by Beesus [2679467] here)
Simulator link
A solid low-heat very strongly based on dance's design, slightly lower MIPS but can function 29 times without having issues. Dirt cheap as well.
Requires:
- PSU x1
- CPU x2
- eCPU x22
- Computer Fan x1

TAGS: Single-chassis | Pre-OC | Low-Heat
Simulator link
Half the uses compared to the previous layout giving you 15 shots, but an increase of nearly 10% in MIPS. Significantly more expensive as well, with the use of HPCPUs.
Requires:
- PSU x2
- CPU x3
- eCPU x7
- HPCPU x7
- Water Block x4

TAGS: Single-chassis | Post-OC | Low-Heat
Simulator link
18 uses and very strong performance, somewhat cheaper than its zero-heat counterpart with a similar performance. Uses no water blocks and a single fan for cooling, making it a good option if you have plenty of heat sinks.
Requires:
- PSU x3
- CPU x2
- HPCPU x9
- Computer Fan x1
- Heat Sink x7

TAGS: Double-chassis | Post-OC | Low-Heat
Simulator link
A strong double-chassis option, with up to 12 uses.
Requires:
- PSU x7
- CPU x3
- HPCPU x20
- Water Block x8
- Heat Sink x5

TAGS: Triple-chassis | Post-OC | Low-Heat
Simulator link
The usual design with the usually high performance: 15 uses with an almost flat 6.5BFS. Very expensive as usual.
Requires:
- PSU x10
- CPU x1
- eCPU x3
- HPCPU x32
- Computer Fan x1
- Water Block x8
- Heat Sink x10

HIGH-HEAT LAYOUTS
Layouts that generate a ton of heat but are equally powerful, will function less than ten times before heat becomes an issue.

TAGS: Single-chassis | Pre-OC | High-Heat
Simulator link
Arguably the strongest pre-overclocking rig, will work exactly once, with heat almost touching 100% yet not quite overheating. Still pretty expensive.
Requires:
- PSU x3
- CPU x3
- eCPU x2
- HPCPU x13
- Water Block x1

TAGS: Single-chassis | Post-OC | High-Heat
(Original design by Fetheryhorse6 [2317488])
Simulator link
Another one-shot, with a very significant increase in performance.
Requires:
- PSU x4
- HPCPU x13
- Water Block x4

TAGS: Double-chassis | Post-OC | High-Heat
(Original design by Fetheryhorse6 [2317488])
Simulator link
Standardized layout employing the single layout version. Still as effective
Requires:
- PSU x8
- HPCPU x26
- Water Block x8

TAGS: Triple-chassis | Post-OC | High-Heat

An interesting design using a partial powerbank approach, only uses 9 cooling components and is the closest I've seen to 7BFS on a functional rig. The sheer amount of HPCPUs used in this design at the time of posting makes the price tag on this toaster a whopping 80M, or close enough to that.
Requires:
- PSU x12
- CPU x1
- eCPU x4
- HPCPU x37
- Water Block x9

Don't think this needs mention, but updated the recommended layouts and other things regarding water blocks and heat sinks that I didn't update before, and moved the recommended layouts to a different post since it was giving me an error due to length. Requested that post get pinned so here's hoping!
EDIT: It's pinned! \(°A°)/

Think that's about it for this crime... not many updates to do for quite a while, now onto updating the disposal guide (it's been quite a while) and finally burglary.

Did a bit of part rearrangement on an old recommended rig; found out that you can get 6 BF Strength with 0 heat gain with the following setup.

33x ECPUs,
15x Water Cooling blocks
12x HCPUs
6x PSUs,
3x CPUs (on the left hand side - right hand side gained heat in my testing)

Prolly' not the best, nor' the most efficient; but It works with a random assortment of nearly all the components; having 0 wasted Rig Power at 150% overclock

Total cost for 3 rigs, at current market rates, is 28m.
