it helps A LOT and not being in one will definitely make growth harder
Without faction perks, just drug addiction and rehab bills progress faster :D
Still, if you don`t care about fast progress drugs or factions are not needed but it will slow down progress a lot.

yes, and the minimum you want is -50% drug addiction gain and +10%gym gains...

Look at it this way. You don't necessarily need a boat to cross the Atlantic ocean but it sure as f**k helps.
Factions provide boosts to gym gains, reductions to drug side effects, among other benefits. To top it off, factions often have a wealth of knowledge about the game in the form of members. Lastly, and most importantly, they provide the social aspect that the game needs to keep you interested in the long run.

Most of the time I train and talk s***.
Helping others etc.
Sometimes trading if I'm really bored.
Then at wars kill ppl.
Kind of nice balance.
