If I get promoted to a new class, can I no longer race in the class below? I upgraded my car to almost max and got promoted. Seems a waste of my car if so. Thanks.

Yes once you get promoted to a new class, any official races you enter will be in that class.
Normally the strategy is to only upgrade your car with the points you have when you enter the class, and then save any additional points you may earn until the next class

Thank you. I used all my points and now don't finish in the places. That would explain why I was lapping everyone in the class below. They were saving their points ?
Likely. Note depending on how much you upgraded your car it may be better than the ones in ur new class. That would help you save some points for later.
Many people do this yes. You can still use that car if you wish, but yes those points were likely wasted long-term. Most will spend a couple points to increase the speed which they get points, but not many of them.
Don't worry, you'll have plenty of points in the long run. I'm class A, about 27 racing skill, and have 7k points to spend... Just grind.
Spend 1 point on your car for "strip out" in the lower classes, and save all your other points for later. Then at B class you can either repeat that strategy with a random B class car, or buy a cosworth and max it out (because it can still be used on grass tracks in A class).

Me i did things the slow way and updated the cars fully all the time, A-class was impossible to win points in most of the time.
Still.. the cosworth could win sometimes. Took a while but eventually i got my merits.

Try to use the car that you upgraded to see if you can win some point with it. And if you are stuck with no point, no bproblem, just use the dirt car without upgrade. as soon as you have few point upgrade it and that s it. In B class you can start to upgrade the sierra, that will be usefull in class A also ;)
