    For all the people saying "maybe an underscore", be aware that cracking passwords only allow alphanumeric characters, so [a-z0-9]. Special characters are not permitted and out of 5,000+ passwords recorded I haven't seen underscores or other special characters being used. …

Likewise but possible I guess, all the word lists I've ever used have had passwords with underscores and I'm guessing Torn devs have utilised some of them.

If only there was a forum for bug reports.

Probably means you had two devices open - one which guessed the char, and the second took the screenshot above.

And how exactly would that show the money gained but not update the rest of it?

Edit: and I did refresh the page just to make sure something didnt load weird in my browser

What exactly do you think pressing the button does?
  • Send request to the server saying "Pls spend 5 nerve and crack this password here"
  • Server updates the databases with said values and returns relevant data, including the crime flavour text and the amount earned
  • Your client adds the flavour text and earnings as a new element below the crime you clicked the button for
That's all there is, it doesn't magically update every component on the page.

Have you tried it? Cause i just did, opened 2 tabs, had them at the exact same spot in cracking, went to one tab and pushed the button, went to the other tab and everything had been updated.

Tabs are different than different devices. By using different devices mine just hits a react failure but that's because the button was still to brute force, rather than to crack. Things will often refresh when visibility changes, but often won't (nothing is ever consistent across the internet...)

I still have no idea how this happened, but I'm ruling out an underscore right away.

Fair enough, I stand corrected :)

FWIW I tested this when I landed and (confirming just for my own curiosity) you can't use any special characters.

Ya, its f**king stupid of me to ask if anyone else has had this happen before I just start posting that I found a bug, my bad.
