I'm new here and was just wondering if there a purpose to every item? What is the purpose of random items such as bottle caps, yucca plant, or even the tampon? Are these used for missions or in some other way?

no, some (a lot of) items are completely useless.
with crimes 2.0 some of them still have a chance to become tools or materials for doing crimes, so keep that in mind if you want to sell some.

Every item is worth something, try putting something you think is junk on the market or bazaar for lower price than the lowest price, someone will buy it.
