Hi there...

So Im curious, torn is a game that mirrors society. Society is developed by people.

People are playing a game.

The game puts emphasis on the bad (crimes, muggings, battles, wars, drugs, etc.)

It also has good(jobs)

I'm curious to know your thoughts on this matter. What do you think about in torn, and what do you think about out of torn?

No one is alone...these are words...seeds

Crimes bad

Jobs good

But....

Jobs are, in effect, modern slavery 

The majority of people don't work because they like it...

They work because they have to pay for things

Jobs bad

Crime bad

Game only thing good

Game is break from normality

In general, in & outside of torn, unless you're a psychopath, you don't just do crimes for fun.

If we were to remove all repercussions for doing crimes, most people would be doing them, though not just for the sake of it, there's always an underlying reason or a problem that needs to be solved.

Let's take torn as an example, you're a new person just starting out. first thought is: how do I make money? well there's jobs, but turns out that job's payout is shit and isn't nearly sufficient to keep up with your daily expenses. so you start looking elsewhere..Trading? you're just starting out with no capital whatsoever to your name so that's out of the question. And so you start looking at other unmethodical ways, you start looking into crimes and realize: hey! this pays quite well, and it doesn't require much work either!
you start liking doing crimes, you look into mugging, joining a gang and starting turf wars. And so it begins, your life full of crime.

Funnily enough, this isn't all that much different from real life, you work a 9-5 job with a shit boss and shit pay, you've got mouths to feed & you can't a find a way to. Under that pressure you start veering towards the dark side, same story as in torn, bit by bit. You'll feel remorse at first, but you'll forget about that.

You see, the underlying issue beneath crime is the way society itself works, if people got paid fairly and with realistic standards so that you could actually LIVE off of that job, crime rates would go down. But we all know that isn't the truth. the rich get richer & the poor stay poor.

Anyway, that's my take and feel free to point out anything you deem unrealistic or outright incorrect

Well op is from South Africa, Torn is the little brother of South Africa, so in and out, I feel right at home... You got to survive brother 😉

Slavery would mean you don't get paid.

Regardless whether you like you job or not, you trade your time, effort and skills for money which can buy you things that fulfill your basic needs and also luxury elements.

Expecting something else would mean (I assume) expecting your job to be fun, pay you a decent amount even if it's useless, and to not feel like an effort and time sink because it's fun. But then what do you sacrifice/invest, what's the benefit of your existence to society?

I didn't say slavery.... I said modern slavery 

People who are coerced into modern slavery can be in a paid position but often get paid but at a low rate (most jobs can pay more but wont)

People who are coerced into modern slavery are often afraid of leaving because of threats, violence, coercion, deception, or abuse of power (you can't leave as you won't be able to afford to live and your be homeless...... coercion, threats, deception)

Not everyone employed can afford luxury elements 

Having a job you enjoy doing is different to having a job your doing because you need the money

People who are rich and dont need to work but continue to work do so because they lake the job

Part of my job means I may deal with modern slavery at some point

Torn is a city of billionaire god-soldiers who fight bloody civil wars against each other and still shoplift. It's about living a life without repercussions.

While I get the distinction that a paycheck means you're technically not a slave, the idea that I have to be of some benefit to society in order to live a happy, fruitful life is a bit heavy-handed and scary, to be honest. The reality is much of what constitutes living has been monetized and packaged as a product so that there is no living anymore unless you take part in the job market. Air, water, heat, light, food. Regardless if we think people are entitled to these things by birth-right, there is no reason these basic needs have to be hoarded and passed out like merit chips either. We buy life with paychecks from jobs we have to work at, or else we die. So...freedom?

Compared to animals, or people thousands of years ago, we can (for the sake of exaggeration) consider clean water, warm shelter, healthy food all luxuries. Everybody is free to leave the fixed structure of vilages/cities, and go survive in the wilderness. But that requires a large variety of skills, and a lot of luck. The human system evolved to allow us to focus our time into one skill, get the most amount of value for that, and invest the payment into whatever we need and maybe want.

I don't think anybody has the right to anything just because of birth, and I think almost everybody has the freedom to detach from human society and try their luck on their own, but I don't think it's worth it. Cities have rules and systems, if somebody doesn't accept them, they shouldn't be granted the benefits of living within the city.

 I would rather go to work and buy a phone and play online games on it than spend most of my days trying to hunt to not starve

Yes modern slavery is a thing, but saying that jobs in general are mostly (if not all, I don't know what you meant exactly) modern slavery would simply be absurd

The economy, mass panicking > worsening what's worse already

Watching how the price goes up too high / too low is like seeing irl where we suspect someone behind it when the price of stuff instabil, that leads to conspiracy theory and so on lol (Sometimes it makes me glad we have a central bank that intervene to protect the nation when the money is highly tied to super volatile exchange rate)

The egoism of people, sometimes we see stuff like stealing money from vault/faction keep appearing (Gotta be a good lesson to stay on toes irl)

Education >> you can argue it waste of time >> but from torn, we can see, it gives an "edge"

How to make meaningful money = same like irl = you need to interact with people :D

Now, how about the correlation buy/sell/ normal mugging irl? Pretty easy, we safe yet, because there is a law and order, they are suck sometimes, but as long as they work, things will not go down (See mayhem+looting? thats the signal) 

Now, how about relationship? Sometimes we see lot of guy got trapped (somehow) in a toxic faction / partner, things that literally can be ended with a few mere clicks.... But look at them, they like drown in inescapable mud (somehow) 

pretty much similarity right :P

Well technically, the definition of modern slavery works with the majority of people in a work place

Gome are the days of living off the land... freely 

Free land for growing your own crops is non existent unless you have a garden... otherwise you have to pay for some land and then you need money to keep it going 

Employment and "modern slavery" go hand in hand

All because a farmer once said to someone... if you help me I'll give you food... that turned into... I don't like that food, if you give me money then I can buy different food..... BOOM!!!!!

Have you seen the news (in most countries now) about the migration crisis... people wanting to live in a different country, some don't want to accept the rules of that country, but yet.... they still live here and the country can't do much about them without repercussions from the public and for fear of not being elected again

Torn is actually a nicer alternative to what "bad" would look like in society and it mirrors society in a way that is closer than you think, just with less permanent consequences for capital crimes.  Given enough time, money, and connections you can "break" the law and get away with it quite easily - repercussions that can't really impede you unless you attain the ultimate notoriety and infamy.   

Being more educated doesn't make you "less" evil or prone to crime and in fact makes you far better at it.  (That's reflected in many real life serial killers, conmen, mass fraudsters, etc who don't have a specific moral compass that makes them think twice.) You end up with the education to avoid becoming infamous and are able to manipulate and do deals from the shadows while someone else takes the fall.

Actual polite society - in my opinion - hangs by a thread and by the threat of actual punishment for breaking the law.  If there were no one to enforce laws in any society, most would disintegrate over night.  Any grievances would be settled violently, mass raping and enslaving would occur, human sacrifices would probably come back,  just absolute "might makes right".   Not "modern slavery", but brutal slavery of all the kind of horrors that came with it in during ancient times.   

I dont think people realize how good the world is relatively speaking when compared to lets say 2000 years ago.    Alot of things we think are "eradicated" now are only so because there's enough people with power and numbers forcing them to be so.  Slavery, human sacrifice, infanticide  etc were all practiced on a shockingly wide scale across most people groups across human history.   Given the chance, it would make a comeback. 

Torn is a complex game. But reality is way far more complex. So in fact, I turn to Torn because it's simpler.
