Can someone explain the purpose of joining a gym? I reached lvl 4 and received a message for Rockys Gym. I don’t understand how to join, what the cost might be, or even….why one would?

Higher gyms will reward slightly higher stat gains.

And once you are finished all of the heavy weight gyms, you are able to unlock "special" gyms which will give a massive boost in a specific stat.

You unlock higher gyms simply by spending energy(each gym has it's own requirment for total energy expended) and then a financial cost on top of that.

There is a merit for owning each Lightweight, Middle-Weight and Heavy Weight Gym, I don't know if there is one for special gyms though.

There are several gyms, as you train in one, you work towards unlocking the next. Each gym gives slightly better gains than the one before,  at least in 1 stat, if not more.

If you click on the next gym in line, once at 100%, it will show you the gains per stat, and cost to open.

It is definitely worth opening the next gym, as soon as it's available,  as you won't progress further in gyms until you do.

It's a long run to getting all gyms open, I still haven't,  but not unlocking them will definitely stunt your growth, and take that much longer.

The gym in Torn is where you train your battle stats. These are used in fights against other players to determine who wins. Doesnt matter how big your gun/armour is. The stats matter more!
