conversely you could just buy plushies, they usually retain their value (unless Ched does something stupid again and points become even more the opposite of valuable)

As already mentioned here: noobs can use piggy bank, then its stock market, and when you have PI - vault.
The only way to store money that wasn't mentioned here is Auction House. You use your money to make a bid, and when your bid gets outbid money is transferred to bank for you to safely withdraw.

I wouldn't recommend plushies as points are slowly dropping in value but there are other items that you can buy for close to their npc sell value
As a newbie, weekly Bank investing should keep most of your money safe, the rest should be used to stockpile xanax, until you find a good faction (minimum 400k respect, aim higher tho) where you can use faction vault to keep any sums safe.
Once you have a over 2b (max bank investment) you should be investing extra money into stocks, so you should never have large sums in faction vault, in this game, money is the main way to make more money, so make your money work.
