I didn't read any of the wikis on racing and spent all the points i earnt upgrading my E rated card and now I'm in D league can not win or even get above 5th place.
Is there anything i can do or have i ruined racing for myself?

Try the class D BMW X5 (now called the Bavaria X5) and race only official races on the five dirt tracks (Mudpit, Stone Park, Hammerhead, Two Islands, Parkland).
With some patience you should eventually place in a few races so you can get a few upgrades and get back on track to the path suggested in Baldr's racing FAQ.

Follow the advice above, but also work on building your RS by joining/starting long lap races any time you are likely to be offline for a few hours. This means anytime you are at work or school and every night before you go to bed.
Until you reach class B, avoid using any more race points.
These longer races will help your RS grow regardless of winning or losing, then with the higher RS, you will place better in official races.
