What are the benefits of adding an enemy (or being added as an enemy)? I searched through forums and wiki and it seems it just tells you when someone’s online and can prevent them from buying from you? Is there anything more to that?

It's part of chronicling Torn in your own little way. You can watch their progress (or lack of). In years to come you can look back at the reason they made the list and remind yourself how awfully low humans will stoop for pixels.
Like that time a dude blatently stole artwork from the profile of a deceased player (RIP) and submitted it to the newspaper as their own:

Another Benefit - they stay on the list even if they change names. So no running away from the consequences of their actions!
To increase my fan club 😉, to live rent free in their minds, to know they are seething over their keyboards when they see my name. Fills me with joy.

So the benefit of enemy listing someone is that it can help mark that player as untrustworthy. And if other people do the same, it gets easier to spot scammers.
I think of it like the Chinese Social Credit System.
