Totally agree with the guides - the Baldr one gives a good idea on what lies ahead.
Personally I'd suggest getting the stock ticker by day 14 because it's a great place to park your money as mugging is a thing in Torn.
Also, the 14 day newbie protection is very important. Level 15 is the benchmark for you to work towards to as that allows flying and by then your stats are decent enough to defend yourself somewhat.
Lastly, welcome to Torn! This is the place where your character can grow in many ways. My faction alone sees a lot of different play styles and priorities. So you do you.

Join a good faction - either one with friends or one that has decent respect (over 200k? 500k? People will debate this,,,) since it will give you more benefits than a n00b faction. But make sure it’s filled with nice people that like to help n00bs…
