I’ve been playing for about a day and i noticed that newbies get a lot of random items and money from strangers. Its awfully suspicious but damn am i grateful for the free 20k. Is the community just that nice or is this a calm before a storm where I’ll get mugged left and right the moment i reach a certain level?

I have said it for years and will continue to stand by it. Torn is honestly only an ok game at best when looking at it from a single player / solo game. The mechanics are not bad but not …

Everyone gets mugged. It's just how much they mug.
People can be very generous and I am surprised you have not been mugged yet. Greenleaves often enjoy mugging each other.
People are just trying to buy you with generosity in hopes you'll add them to your friends list.
Lots of players like to encourage new players to stick around, as that helps the game grow.
Lots of players like to harass new players because they are the big bad bullies.
Lots of players like to ignore the new players because f**k em, they new, right?
That was my experience too as a green leaf, but you learn quickly that's there's plenty of meanies in this game ;(
I mug people very often, and use a portion of the proceeds to do new player and discord giveaways.

There is alot of mean players on here I been picked on a lot just stay clear from them if you get the chance
Some people are nice here. In fact most people are if you play your cards right. However many newbies don't so be careful
A good first impression goes a long way. A lot of noobs try to make a name for themselves and make a bad first impression only to be met with swift recourse, and then complain about said recourse, perpetuating the cycle.
Be good or be good at it, is the general rule of thumb.

We want you to keep playing so we can mug you when you least expect it so that you can be cannon fodder for our ranked wars so that we have more people to farm the item market for under valued shit to trade to us in bulk so that we have more people to talk to 😀
Both. Quite a few senior players will give you stuff that is pocket change to them but will mean a lot to you when your new and a million is an unimaginable amount. As a greenleaf, you can't be mugged by non-greenleafs. Be careful with public posts like this one or doing anything that attracts attention, especially after your greenleaf status ends and good luck.

Some people just like to give new players stuff, reasons vary but one thing to consider is that 20k for a new player means a lot more than what it could mean for someone who's been in torn for 5+ years.
We try to help people out where we can some people are nice especially to new players I run a giveaway thread for anyone under 90 days just to help out starting players
It was super nice when you scammed 12+ noobs by buying loses but refusing to pay them until you got called out on the forums and booted from the stompers.
