What button(s) am I supposed to be pressing during attack? What’s my strategy? I’m so lost.

Click the weapon(s) you want to attack with. So if you have a primary weapon equipped, lets say a rifle, and you want to shoot with that rifle, tap/click the rifle. If you want to stab with your melee weapon, lets say a knife, tap/click the knife.
as SLY say, just click what you want to use and you will use it, if you have a rifle, click the rifle and then you will shoot with that. depending the accuracy of the gun, the enemy stats and yours, you will hit or not, and then also depending your stats, enemy stats and damage of your gun you will make more or less damage.
an example can be: you have 100 spd (stat for hit your target) and your enemy has 100 dex (stat to avoid being hit), if your gun has 62% accuracy, you will hit the guy 62% of times, same if you have 200 spd and your enemy has 100 dex, you will hit 124% of times, you will hit them always, also if your enemy has 200 dex and you have 100 spd, with that same gun you will hit the guy 31% of times.
about damage i dont know the maths behind it, but i know that if you have 14 times more def than enemy str, you will not recive damage. thats why sometimes you can be hit or hit someone and make 0 damage, even if its a crit hit as head, neck and heart.
i may be wrong with something, so anyone who know better about this, correct me if im wrong, anyways, i reccomend take a look at some guides in forums, guide section, to learn more.
about strategy... depends in you, if you want to make stealth attack, go for melee, its not just use melee, stealth its a little more complex. if you want to finish fast, use a granade or HEG to lower a lot the enemy life. but all its about you, if you know you cant hit an enemy since he has high dex, go using a more acc gun or use your melee since it usually has more acc than guns, you can also use a temporal as pepper spray or tear gas to lower his dex. same if you dont want to get hit, use temporals that lowers enemy spd. take a look in what you like more.
