I think it's a bunch of fuss over piddly diddly tidly twa+

Truly. No disrespect. That's just me.

I think the idea is cool, but I'm not sure if time gating is the right way to go about it. In my case, I created my account ages ago and just played around for a week before life got busy and I dropped it pretty quickly.

Then, I came back years later as a total newbie. I know my situation is a bit extreme, but I can totally see new players signing up and then not returning for a few days or even weeks before diving in fully. Maybe it would make more sense to link it to the "Time Played" stat instead, it'd obviously need some balancing, but I think it'd be a more accurate representation.

I would agree with what you are suggesting, but I would adjust some details:

  • Commenting in T&G, T&U should be allowed from day 1 because they might have questions/problems regarding to a specific guide or script, which would belong in the thread itself instead of Q&A. I have not looked into the missions forum, but I assume the same goes for it.
  • Commenting in Company Recruitment should also be allowed from day 1. Don't gatekeep them from asking for a job or trains.
  • Full access to Attacking from day 1. That place is basically just for buying and selling losses/escapes anyway.
  • No idea why you wanna restrict gambling and poker at all.
  • F&G should probably also be unlocked from day one. At the very least commenting.
  • Don't limit commenting in B&I to their own threads. If someone found a bug and they have additional information they should be able to comment it.

In general I wouldn't really want to restrict commenting in any forums except the different discussion forums, but these are the ones I thought new players should definitely have access to from day 1.

I agree. I feel the gatekeeping for the gambling forums is unnecessary. The time it takes to unlock the various things in the casino is gatekeeping enough. I for one never thought about using the poker forum until after I unlocked poker in the casino. So therefore, tying access to the poker forum to the unlocking of poker itself makes more sense. I just think this suggestion has way too much unnecessary gatekeeping for me to be able to upvote it.

I appreciate those thoughts. A lot of those forums open for commenting on day 3.

The restrictions on Attacking, Gambling, Poker, etc. are all for the sake of noise. I very rarely have seen a new account (excepting restarts) post something worth posting or commenting on any of these forums. Points on the forums specifically called out:

  • Attacking - I agree that Attacking (loss selling) is relevant from the start, so I see the validity of the argument on that forum. Commenting and posting available from day 1.
  • Poker - If access was opened on unlocking the ability to play poker (reaching level 5) I could see how the time gate would be pointless. I actually like that mechanic a lot.
  • Gambling - Happy to see commenting being available on day 1, but I still feel like posting (making a new thread) should be held until the 21-day mark as with most forums.
  • Company Recruitment - Respectfully I disagree without reservation. No need to look for a job with 30 total working stats.
  • F&G - Commenting would already be unlocked from the start. I stand by my opinion that posting should wait until 21 days.
  • T&G - Most questions a brand new player would have on a tutorial or guide would already have been answered in the thread if they bothered to read. Not 100% against, but as of now I'm unconvinced.
  • B&I - I'm torn on this one. B&I is a forum where noise specifically needs to be reduced. Not in terms of preference, but in terms of the functionality of the forum. However, you make a good point that they might have an insight worth sharing. I think if this went to the devs they'd amend this portion to whatever they feel is appropriate, and if they weigh in that they deem it unrestricted then there we go. This one is more for the devs than the players.

All of these items are open for discussion! I'm pending a second edit to the post in regards to Attacking and would love some additional input on that before I make the edit. I'm also asking for thoughts on these ^ items. If we come to a good consensus on an edit, I'll add it in!

Appreciate you taking the time to offer feedback on this!

R+ but i would unlock attacking commenting and trading post commenting day 1 so newbies can bump their favorite trader, loss buyer, or free gone fishing merit dude.

I disagree with a lot of this, forum quality is crap in general but older accounts post just as much dumb/useless/troll content. All players should be able to participate in the forums, without having to perfectly align with torn's idiosyncratic internet culture first.

And if you actually went down all of GD first page and counted how many useless posts are created by players with 90+ days, you'd realize account age isn't the main problem.

That said. A flat 15 day restriction before being able to create threads (and maybe even comment) in most forums could potentially cut down on a lot of spam, without having much negative impact. R+ because I think it's time to consider that at least. AI generated crap is becoming a lot more noticeable and annoying.

NichtGersti [3380912]

It's crazy how much AI slop there is... I don't even understand their motivation in posting that stuff. I can understand and have nothing against letting AI improve your grammar or making what you write more legible in general, but why would anyone make AI generate some random shit about stuff they don't even really care about nor understand just to share it with strangers they don't care about?

The only reason I can think of is a need for attention... but in Torn of all places?

Viciously_Grim [2752611]

Older players are boring and the majority don't even post in the forums. Noobs keep Torn exciting. Without noobs HOF would actually have to poke each other with sticks to keep the forums engaging. Hell even the recent HOF vault scandal wasn't nearly as exciting as the past 6 noob vault scams individually, much less combined.

So, sorry but pass.

Also bounty jail is a money sink. Who else would y'all be bountying to hell and back if not for random noobs posting in the wrong forums?

Noobs bring life to an otherwise stagnant game.

Rawk [2663375]

most of these quit or as fedded as multis before they even lose green leaf status and could be bountied. beyond that, i'd hazard a guess that a majority of what would be prevented would be wrong forum posting (marriage solicitations, brilliant investment schemes, bad suggestions)

here's a sampling of the high quality posts we've seen today that you want to keep in gd.

Viciously_Grim [2752611]

I'm absolutely not complaining about those posts. The mr_madrazo one has gotten interesting tbh 🤷‍♀️ At least he's being engaging while not only admitting he's a scammer but continuing to try to scam, and not threatening to perma hosp, nuke or raid anyone who makes fun of him.

Dr_O_Plebeian [2667483]

R+ though I don't think simply timegating is the solution, maybe a severe limit at the start for the usual forums like GD? Either way, personally like to see an improvement on reducing low quality posts spammed.

At least if there is a delay on green leaves from posting there will be less posts like this one seen by the general public (kudos for them being cleaned up pretty fast though!)
