I noticed this with someone last week but didn't make note of it.

 

Online icon, last action and API last action are all sorts of mismatched in general but the gray status icon while actively chatting was a new one for me.

You can be legitimately online with a last action of many minutes ago  - happens while I'm writing newsletters or forum posts sometimes. I assume it's the same if you're only chatting and not clicking around in Torn. But I haven't seen someone show up as offline while chatting before!

This is possible if the person is using Chat 2.0 system where the session is not terminated in case you logout in another tab so you can appear offline. Chat 3.0 resolves this issue, this will be a non-issue once we move all players to Chat 3.0 once open beta is concluded.

 

Sending a chat message does not update Last action though, it requires specific actions in game to update Last action. It is not possible to update this value upon sending a chat message, even in 3.0 system.
