Had this been a cheating scenario, I can see your point and I do agree.  Given the situation and the fact that myself and several friends were affected by this "bug" that resulted in us having negative on-hand money, I applaud the creativity of those who had billions negative finding a way to recover some of the funds and essentially "mug free".

Also, please mug me, I am keeping hopes up that somehow it'll remove the muggers money and donate it to my negative funds.

I don’t think anyone is ranting about scripted mugs in here. The original post pre-edit accused two players of abusing a bug for profit which is a pretty serious accusation. The reality is it was through no fault of their own that they had a negative on hand balance. I am neutral regarding my opinion on buy mugging. I am however of the opinion that no one is entitled to a mug. If you work for it and get it, good. But expecting a massive mug, not getting it due to legitimate circumstances, then saying the person was cheating is not on. Nothing in my prior comment is devaluing the mugging community. Getting a money spy is also a legitimate tactic - one that prevents unexpected surprises like this.

I think you might be confused as to my role or intent here. My response was directly about two players being accused of cheating when they weren’t. I have zero idea about the bookie issue other than there’s a B&I thread that was being handled by the appropriate admins. I have nothing to do with bookie stuff so wouldn’t comment on that.

honestly tho, idk why you guys don't just make it a debt like with duke, add interest if they don't agree  to a minimum payment plan

but i'm just a lil player, don't mind my silly ideas

Edit: interest for failure to pay back, or better know as a "late payment fee" wouldn't be preferred, maybe the threat of negative balance will suffice

Matty_h [48911]

Just to clarify the money the staff have taken back is money you’ve had and spent or still got isn’t it?

So technically this is profiting if im understanding it correctly

*I disagree with how devs handled it before the horde turns up

"Interest" on a removal of funds for a screw up on Torn's side, not the player's side?  No thanks.  Sure, make it a duke loan - that would have been far better for the players who had billions removed.  But interest?  F*ck that.

Lanfear [2016825]

I am a lucky one in all of this as I had only bet 20m and my payout was 42.8m.   I had removed those funds from bookie and put in my vault.  My current on-hand balance is now -42.8m (no big deal, plenty of funds in the vault and I didn't spend them).

There are others who won and withdrew upwards of 3.6b and now their on-hand is negative that amount.

Dilligaf777 [1699660]

thats fair, the issue of it just being a debt with no downsides for not repaying will cause greater issues

maybe the threat of negative balancing again if a minimum payment doesn't come through?

But expecting a massive mug, not getting it due to legitimate circumstances

The fact is, this shouldn't even be a thing. I applaud the mugee on a creative solution for a shit situation, though.

100% this will continue to be abused.

Its not really legitimate when its due to staff error. Its definitely not a game mechanic thats intended to be used, its simply staff punishing both players at no fault of their own.

I could care less about the buy mugger but stripping money because you arent vetting your bookie provider properly is pretty wild.

Imagine actually encouraging money spies because of staff error and arguing it as legitimate, oh wait...

WaywardSquid [2330087] Officer Officer

I couldn’t say if it was a staff error or not, all I know is what I read in the bug post where the bookie dev explained the provider data was incorrect and the bet was refunded. The negative cash on hand is a legitimate actual condition of the two mugees that were the post topic, and whether I or you agree with it or not that’s where things are at the moment.

Bish [141605]

It is always shitty for someone expecting normal game mechanics to encounter negative cash on hand though, especially when somebody is positive enough in networth that it doesn't give the appearance of being possible. It's basically a reward to those who receive it (who, let's be frank, are typically cheaters who had balance adjustments)  because they get to sell their goods at inflated prices with zero risk with the appearance of a lucrative possible mug. It's a reward to the person with negative cash on hand and a punishment to the wider community.

For those saying "you can get a money spy," you clearly have never known how time-sensitive mugs are or how slow it is to find someone in a Hair Salon who's online, has points they haven't spent on education time reduction, and a willingness to sell them. The alternative of TV network folk is even more expensive and would be unrealistic on both the time front and the cost to do every single time. You have only precious seconds to act in a mug before the target saves themselves or somebody else takes it, and negative cash on hand is rare, so you'd lose way more money trying this than you'd save.

Taxxon [882264]

Shouldn't the Bookie Dev be vetting this before hand? This 100% sounds like staff error, regardless the point is it isnt the players fault and theyre both punished, wrongfully. That 100% is staff responsibility, unless you want to argue players should be checking other RL provider odds before betting in Torn Bookies, which seems ridiculous.

Just sounds like a lazy way of dealing with an issue because you can not be bothered to do it properly.

To clarify, this isnt targeted specifically to you, if that wasnt obvious.

Beerstein [1322136]

The bookie will ALWAYS have canceled bets, ALWAYS. It's simply the nature of bookies, not just a Torn thing but as long as bets are based on living things (humans animals etc.) unforeseen shit happens. That aint the bookies, that's just life.
