Since I have more time to post because I am perma hosped (due to a butthurt person who entered a battle of wits unarmed and has more spare tornbucks than braincells; jokes on them, to me torn is a debate game with an attached gym&crime minigame), and due to Stephen's thread that suggested a more diverse post landscape, I decided to make a new thread.

While my country's politics are not really well known internationally, I'd like to talk about a phenomenon here that you might have some insights in from your very own perspectives.

As in many other countries concerted efforts of far-right groups to influence and frame the public debate, combined with big societal and international changes, led to people being scared and yearn for simpler times that never existed.

The far-right AfD (housing conspiracy theorists, holocaust deniers and openly racist criminals, supporting russias invasion and having ties to terrorists, murderers and insurrectionists, denying climate change and wanting to tax the poor while cutting taxes for the rich and getting rid of regulations for corporations) is getting more and more support, especially by those who'll suffer under their tax plans (the poor and badly educated ones). But also by middle class folks that yearn for simple answers, who ignore the parts they heavily oppose because the AfD promises solutions for a topic that especially makes them scared. And people who are disappointment in politics, etc. etc., you know the drill quite well I guess.

My question is: The current center-conservative chancelor tries to address some of the talking points of the far-right, undoubtedly in the attempt to reclaim them in a less extremist way and to address the fears and concerns of the aforementioned AfD supporters. I am extremely uncertain though if this is a promising tactic or not. It might legitimize the far-right and make the chancellor look half-assed for not going the full way the AfD claims to do (which is not feasible anyhow, not financially nor legally). Or it might indeed placate people and make them feel seen, helping them to slowly step away from the extreme positions they were herded into.

What do you think? Can this help? Or what do you think are the best measures to combat the polarization of society and bring the wingnuts home?

Remilia [1284087]

If you want to stop polarization you can start by how you address the other side.

You label the AFD as: (housing conspiracy theorists, holocaust deniers and openly racist criminals, supporting russias invasion and having ties to terrorists, murderers and insurrectionists, denying climate change and wanting to tax the poor while cutting taxes for the rich and getting rid of regulations for corporations)

That's insane.

You are causing the polarization. The overwhelming supporters of AFD and MAGA are just people who want better lives and don't like what is happening in their country and you label them as all that shit and dare to ask "Why is everything so polarized". It's because your calling a group the worst thing since Hitler so they dig in and double down on their positions and group together with other people who aren't wholesale dismissing their concerns.

There are political beliefs that are different and worthy of debating, sometimes difference can be allied into a better system.

Then there is political beliefs that seek to drag every debate down into a muddy puddle as a way to deny actual debate or meaningful dialogue. These people do not care one iota about anyone or anything outside their pack of cronys.

These people need to be held to account on their actions. Not there announcements or buster.

On what they have done and what they are doing.

And if they look like a nazi, talk like a nazi and behave like a nazi.

They are a nazi. Therefore they should have a big, unrelenting light shone on them to show the world EXACTLY what they are upto.

Point and laugh. No need to roll in the mud with imbeciles who thrive on making everything shitty

Sopdet [3682823]

Well, they literally do this. Literally. That is not insane that is a proven fact. Their youth organization got shut down because they openly worshipped Hitler and called for the murder of jews.

Literally. Everybody saw it. The insurrectionists I talked about are those of the prince Reuss conspiracy, which literally planned a violent overtaking of the country. The NSU (murdered many immigrant people) also had strong ties to AfD members.

This is literal facts. The rest is literally from their own info sheets.

Oh and a part of the party was found to be racist and fascist (the Höcke wing) and while this structure was "dissolved" all of those people still are members.

Literal holocaust survivors warn about the party. The central organisation of jews in germany warns about them.

https://www.sueddeutsche.de/muenchen/dachau/fuerstenfeldbruck-afd-holocaust-verharmlosung-gericht-1.6137343?reduced=true

This lists all the holocaust denying and relativizing. And how they want to make holocaust denial and nazi slogans legal again.

https://www.juedische-allgemeine.de/politik/Hitler-war-kein-kommunist/

This jewish newspaper addresses how the AfD chef lied about Hitler being a communist when actually Hitler murdered tenthousands of communists in concentration camps just for being communists. Hitler claimed communism was jewish. So this is a completely insane version of victim blaming.

You need to read up, Remilia. Not saying every AfD voter is a Nazi, but they accept literal Nazis in their party. Literal self-confessed Neonazis wave the Afd flag. Central members got indicted for spreading nazi propaganda. They even used literal nazi quotes in their speeches.

Sopdet [3682823]

We did the pointing and laughing. Didn't help. Their voters don't care that AfD politicians say "maybe or maybe not there were warcrimes" in a speech on the holocaust remembrancr day in our parliament.

They don't care that they use literal nazi slogans in speeches or call the holocaust "a speck of bird shit". They don't care that several organizations within the party had to be closed down due to proven and open nazi shit. They don't care that AfD politicians in secretly taped talks speak about destroying the country on purpose, their hate for non-whites and on deporting people with german passports if they have not enough german genes.

They still vote for them.

Night-Owl [3680050]

there are people who care about economy more than politics, and will vote for any candidate who pushes back against "net zero" insanity.
https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2023/sep/24/how-germany-france-and-italy-compare-on-net-zero-emission-targets
"Germany, Europe’s biggest emitter of greenhouse gases, plans to hit net zero emissions by 2045. Every big party bar the far right promised to keep the planet from heating 1.5C."
Germany has a population of 83 million, compared to India and China with 1.4 billion each which are responsible for much of the world's pollution, and yet there are people who think they can change the weather by using "clean energy" (even if they did, it would be within the margin of error).
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nuclear_power_in_Germany
"Nuclear power was used in Germany from the 1960s until it was fully phased out in April 2023."
https://www.reuters.com/business/energy/germanys-energy-transition-hits-reverse-so-far-2025-maguire-2025-05-08
"Clean energy sources generated the smallest amount of Germany's electricity in over a decade so far in 2025, dealing a blow to the energy transition momentum of Europe's largest economy."

Sopdet [3682823]

We are not allowed to recycle our nuclear material. We have piles of rusting barrels with nuclear waste in abandonned mines that leak into the ground water. Nuclear energy was not safe nor cheap nor clean for us.

We still cover >50% of our energy demand via green energy. Even in this phase of low wind output. So green energy is far from failed and despite the small temporary setback still our largest energy supply. That's why russia attacked our wind energy grid a bit back. I rather have them sabotage our wind farms than hypothetical nuclear plants.

Night-Owl [3680050]

industry can't run on wind energy, neither can trucks, neither can private cars except for those who can afford to charge them at exorbitant prices, household energy bills will rise and blackouts will become more common.

This miasma of fascist bullshit is a refined and tactical global endeavor of endless psy ops planned by extremely well funded think tanks filled with ex intelligence agents designed for a new world order of elitist authoritarian control.

Hypocritical [1280905]

I think a large amount polarisation comes from wealth inequality and the actions of those who seek to maintain the imbalance.

Like in my country of Ireland, we have had far right protesters complain about "DEI" policies, which were never over here because DEI is an American term and policy, some racist rich yanks are pushing their far right ideology over here, while Ballymena (a town that recieced zero asylum seekers last year) had multiple riots targeting minorities and had chants of "stop the boats" when the boats are landing in England not Ballymena, that's right wing English rhetoric, again imported in. Not saying there'd be no racism in Ireland without it, just that they are getting their talking points from elsewhere.

A big cause of this is the media owners pushing specific news stories and manipulating what happens because if I'm moaning about immigrants coming in I'l not be focusing on the rich stealing from me.

Obviously I'd be biased but I have countered a lot of these far right rallyies and they generally tend to be people with not much ability to critically think about things... often see rapists, pedophiles, violent criminals and woman beaters leading the chants, often very stupid people who are responsible for their own woe's in life but want to blame it on others and are easily led because they dont question.
