Forums Trolls

Recently, we've had two forums trolls. One fedded, the other still stubbornly active. I won't mention them by name - this is not to protect their identities, but I believe that the more their names are mentioned, the more motivated they are to continue shitposting, because it satisfies their hunger for attention. If you know who I'm talking about, you know. If you don't, that's probably for the better.

Short summary: Maybe it is best not to reply to trolls. After all, the troll wants your attention. That is how they succeed.

Trolls online, so not limited to the ones in TORN, love attention. Imagine trolls posting something provoking, but getting little to no reaction. Just dislikes, and not a single reply, or maybe not even dislikes. Lacking any response, the troll's purpose ceases to exist.

Regarding Torn trolls, things can end in 3 ways:

1. A continuous exchange between trolls and those that want to shut the troll up. Unfortunately, your chances of convincing the troll is little to none. It's going to be an unending argument, and every time you reply to the troll, the troll is rejuvenated to bring chaos and rile people up further more.
2. The troll says/does something out of line and gets fedded. It's possible, but not all trolls are that stupid.
3. People forget that the troll existed. Maybe the troll receives dislikes every time they post, but no actual reply is given. This makes the troll insignificant, and maybe they'll finally shut their trap, because all they are doing is barking at the void.

Unlike the troll:

• I acknowledge my hypocrisy. I have unfortunately commented under the troll's thread days ago, which meant that I supplemented the attention that the troll so craves. To not be a hypocrite, I now regret ever replying to trolls. I naively thought that my words would bring a positive change.
• I don't tell you what you can or cannot do. If you think number 1 is the way to go, I'm not stopping/criticizing you, and frankly, I understand. I am merely sharing my opinion on how to best let trolls fade away, and I think the answer is number 3.

Visualize a troll attempting to rile people up. The troll succeeds, as many argue back under his original post (I applaude the sentiment, but unsure if it's effective). The troll uses emojis/generalizations to mock those that reply to him, and seems very satisified with their handiwork.

Now visualize the same post made by the troll, but there are zero replies. A tumbleweed rolls by. Absolutely no reaction. I can't say I know how the troll is feeling, since the troll is unlikely to share their emotions under their own post, but at least no one is wasting their precious time addressing such insignificance.

I love that TORN has a karma/dislike system. You can express your dissatisfaction with the troll by a simple click, without spending time replying to garbage. And by bringing down their karma, it's an indication to others (at least to those that value karma) that this troll is not a credible person on the forums.

Edit: Advice for myself - don't take the forums too seriously. If you want to spar with the trolls, go for it. To each their own.

Is this a trolling Thread? Should I not reply to it? Should I acknowledge this to assure others it isn't a troll? What if I acknowledge a troll? I'm just feeding into the cycle. Thing is people enjoy playing into the spectacle of it all. They enjoy shitting on someone they view as a safe target, as they know more than likely the majority will agree with them. People claim they hate this, hate that. I would get it all the time in the past but people kept engaging with my content so I kept doing it. These people are role-playing as much as the troll is, yet they sit on a high horse and try to act superior.

You're the real troll in all of this, the one who is reading this right now. 

I am expressing my dissatisfaction with this thread.

Imagine torn with no trade mug... No scam attempts... No petty spats... No forum trolls... No bitter rivalries...

I'm all for putting the nice people first. But we all need something to moan about and gang up on 😆

If I want to be passive-aggressive, I'll go vote. Torn is where we can all meet and be the degenerates we cannot actually be. This is called "role-playing." The RP part of the RPG.
