THE COMPLETE BEGINNER'S GUIDE TO TORN CITY FROM YOUR FIRST DAY TO FINDING YOUR FEET
🤖 A QUICK NOTE BEFORE WE START
This guide has been written from my own experience playing Torn, with AI used to help organise, format and present the information in a cleaner and more readable way.
The goal isn't to pretend there is one perfect way to play. It's to give new and returning players a strong foundation and explain the systems that can otherwise take months to properly understand.
🐾 ABOUT THIS GUIDE
Torn is enormous.
What initially looks like a relatively simple browser game quickly opens into an economy, battle system, crime system, faction scene, stock market, education system, company ecosystem, racing scene and countless other mechanics.
The difficult part for a new player isn't necessarily learning how to click the buttons.
It's knowing which buttons actually matter.
📖 INTRODUCTION WHAT YOU'RE ACTUALLY GETTING INTO
Torn City is a long-term game.
Progress happens over months and years rather than hours and days. Your account continues developing as you train, complete crimes, earn money, finish education courses, participate in factions and gradually understand more of the world around you.
THE IMPORTANT PART
Small advantages stacked over time become enormous.
If you ever feel behind, that is normal. Almost everyone does.
You don't need to understand everything immediately. You just need to understand enough to keep moving in the right direction.
🏁 FINAL NOTE BEFORE WE BEGIN
You cannot play Torn wrong, but you can waste time.
The goal of this series is to help you avoid wasting months learning lessons the hard way.
CHAPTER 01 ⚡ ENERGY, NERVE & HAPPY THE CORE LOOP OF TORN
🔄 THE CORE LOOP
Before you worry about money, stats, factions, or PvP, you need to understand the three bars that quietly control your entire progress in Torn City.
⚡ Energy 🔪 Nerve 😊 Happy
The first habit to learn: Most new players do not stall because they make bad choices. They stall because they let these bars sit full.
⚡ ENERGY THE ENGINE OF PROGRESS
Energy is the single most valuable resource you have. It is how you grow, how you fight, and how you eventually earn serious money. Every point of energy represents potential progress, and it regenerates constantly in the background.
A full energy bar is lost opportunity. When your energy bar is full and you are not using it, you are not pausing your progress. You are losing progress you can never get back.
That is why experienced players log in briefly but often. It is not about playing longer. It is about spending energy before it caps.
Early on, energy should almost always go into the gym. Attacking players can be useful, but gym training is what builds the foundation everything else depends on. Even imperfect training is better than skipping it entirely.
You do not need to understand advanced stat optimisation yet. You just need to build the habit of training every single day.
🔪 NERVE YOUR EARLY GAME BACKBONE
Nerve fuels crimes, and crimes are how new players survive financially.
Crimes are not exciting at first. They will not make you rich overnight, and that is intentional. What they do provide is consistency. A steady trickle of income and something far more important in the long run: Crime Experience.
Just like energy, nerve regenerates automatically. A full nerve bar is unused potential. The goal early is not to chase the biggest payout, but to succeed as often as possible. Failing crimes slows your progress and wastes time.
Reliability beats risk. Reliable crimes, repeated consistently, will always outperform risky crimes you fail half the time.
If you ever feel stuck early on, it is usually because you are not using your nerve often enough.
😊 HAPPY THE MULTIPLIER MOST PLAYERS MISUSE
Happy does not generate progress on its own. Instead, it amplifies gym training, making each point of energy more effective. Higher happy means better stat gains for the same energy spent.
This leads many new players into a trap. They chase happy boosts instead of building discipline. Candy and drugs can temporarily increase happy, but they do not replace consistent training. A player who trains regularly with average happy will outperform a player who trains rarely with high happy.
Happy matters, but not before habits do.
🔄 HOW THESE THREE BARS WORK TOGETHER
This is Torn at its most fundamental level.
1. You log in. 2. You spend your energy training. 3. You spend your nerve committing crimes. 4. You log out.
Then you do it again later in the day.
Everything else in the game, factions, wars, money making, drugs, PvP, is built on top of this cycle.
Torn is not asking for marathon sessions or constant attention. It is asking for consistency.
🏋️ USING ENERGY IN THE GYM
For a brand new player, the gym is where almost all energy should go.
Gym training is the only reliable way to grow your battle stats, and those stats determine how easily everything else in Torn becomes later on. Attacks, wars, events, and even money making all scale off your stats.
Early on, the exact stat you train matters far less than the habit of training itself. Many new players freeze because they are unsure what the correct choice is. The truth is simple. Training anything is better than leaving energy unused.
Balanced training works well in the early stages. Spreading your energy across stats avoids obvious weaknesses and keeps your account flexible as you learn more about the game.
Build the reflex: If you log in and your energy bar is full, go to the gym first.
There will eventually be reasons to spend energy elsewhere. Early on, those reasons are rare. Using energy to attack players before you understand targeting, recovery, and downtime often leads to frustration and unnecessary hospital time.
The gym gives guaranteed progress. Attacks do not.
Until you know exactly why you are spending energy outside the gym, assume the gym is the correct choice.
🔪 USING NERVE FOR CRIMES
Crimes are your early economy.
Nerve exists to be spent, and crimes are how you turn that nerve into money and progression. The most important factor in crime selection early is success rate.
Failing crimes wastes nerve, slows Crime Experience gain, and creates unnecessary downtime. Easier, more reliable crimes that succeed often will always outperform risky crimes in the long run.
Early crimes will not make you rich, and that is fine. Their purpose is to support your training by covering basic costs while Crime Experience quietly builds in the background so you can move on to more rewarding crimes later.
Do not let nerve sit capped. Logging in to spend nerve regularly is one of the fastest ways to feel stable early on.
🩵 DONATOR STATUS IMPORTANT NOTE
Supporting Torn City via the Donator House provides several perks, the most important being increased maximum energy and faster energy regeneration.
Donator Status can be earned for free using in-game cash by purchasing a Donator Pack from the item market. Early on, this cost may not feel justifiable, and that is fine.
If Torn feels like a game you are enjoying long term, consider supporting the game and its developers. The benefits are meaningful, but they are not mandatory to progress.
⚡ CHAPTER 1 — THE SHORT VERSION
Energy: Spend it. Train every day. Nerve: Spend it. Prioritise reliable crimes. Happy: Use it to improve training, but do not obsess over it.
CHAPTER 02 🎯 THE FIRST MOVES BUILDING THE FOUNDATION OF YOUR ACCOUNT
🎯 YOUR FIRST REAL GOAL REACHING LEVEL 15
Now that you understand the core loop, it is time to apply it.
Progress in Torn does not come from knowing what Energy and Nerve are. It comes from how you use them every day.
Your first major milestone is Level 15.
From level 1 to 15, Torn acts as a protected introduction. You unlock access to various city areas along the way, but the most important unlock by far is the Travel Agency.
Travel allows you to fly overseas, purchase items that are exclusive to other countries, and bring them back to Torn to sell at a markup. Once established, this alone can generate $2,000,000 or more per day, even for relatively new accounts.
Level 15 is not about power or prestige. It is about unlocking reliable income and independence.
⚔️ HOW TO EARN EXPERIENCE
Almost every action in Torn provides some experience, but by far the most meaningful source early on is attacking other players.
This is where many new players get confused. You can train perfectly and still remain low level. Level 15 requires you to fight.
There are excellent community resources that list inactive players whose stats are known, allowing you to attack targets you can reasonably defeat.
🔑 API KEY REQUIRED This tool requires an API Key. You can generate and copy a key by clicking HERE.
🏥 LEAVE, MUG, OR HOSPITALIZE?
After defeating a player, you are presented with three options.
LEAVE — Prioritises experience. MUG — Prioritises money over experience. HOSPITALIZE — Prioritises downtime and control over experience.
When your goal is reaching Level 15, Leave provides the most experience.
🏋️ TRAINING BEFORE YOU LEVEL
Now that you know how to gain experience, there is one more problem. Attacking and training both use Energy.
A common mistake is ignoring the gym while rushing levels. Doing so creates fragile accounts that struggle to win fights and waste energy on losses that provide no experience.
Before seriously tackling leveling lists, you need enough stats to win fights consistently.
EARLY TARGET: ~300–500 in each battle stat You may need less or more depending on your targets.
The goal is not to be strong. The goal is to avoid wasting energy on avoidable losses.
💵 EARLY MONEY MAKING BEFORE LEVEL 15 — CITY PURCHASES
Before reaching Level 15, your money-making options are limited, but there is one simple and reliable method that new players often overlook: City Purchases.
In Torn City, the city's NPC-run shops allow you to purchase up to 100 items per day across all stores combined. This limit resets daily and applies to places like Bits 'n' Bobs, Big Al's, and the Pharmacy.
Many items sold by these shops are priced far below their true value on the Item Market. For example, Bits 'n' Bobs sells bottles of Beer for just $10, while players regularly pay $500+ per bottle on the market. Similar gaps exist for other everyday items sold by NPC shops.
THE HABIT: Buy your daily shop limit whenever possible and learn which NPC items trade above their purchase price.
City purchases are not flashy, but they are consistent, risk-free, and scale naturally once you unlock broader trading options later.
🏝️ HAPPY & RENTING A PRIVATE ISLAND
After reaching Level 15 — or before if you can afford it — one of the most impactful upgrades a newer player can make is where they live.
In Torn City, your housing directly affects your maximum happy, and maximum happy directly affects how effective your gym training is. This is not a cosmetic upgrade. It is a mechanical one that influences your progress every single day.
Maximum happy determines how high your happy bar can go. Two players training the same amount of energy will not grow at the same rate if one has significantly higher maximum happy.
This is where Private Islands come in. Owning a Private Island is a long-term goal. Renting one is an early-game solution.
Renting provides the same maximum happy increase and access to the Airstrip perk without the massive upfront cost.
Newer players should look for short rental periods, ideally around 7 days. This gives immediate access to both the happy bonus and Airstrip without committing to a long-term expense.
The Airstrip reduces flight time when travelling overseas. Faster flights allow you to travel more frequently, sell overseas items more consistently, and smooth out your income.
Many players use the increased efficiency from Airstrip to fund a longer rental. If your travel income feels stable and rent no longer feels restrictive, you can then extend into a 30-day or longer rental.
Your goal here is not prestige. It is efficiency. Renting a Private Island improves both training and income without changing how you play.
🧠 CRIMES & NERVE PROGRESSION
Crimes are your primary source of early progression in Torn City. Their real value is not the payout, but the Crime Experience gained from succeeding consistently.
New players begin with a maximum nerve of 15. This increases over time through a hidden Crime Experience bar that you cannot see.
As you gain enough experience, your maximum nerve increases in increments of 5. There is no crime level indicator and no notification when this happens. The only sign of progress is that your maximum nerve quietly increases.
RECOMMENDED PROGRESSION
Search for Cash ↓ Bootlegging ↓ Graffiti ↓ Shoplifting ↓ Pickpocketing ↓ Continue through the crimes in order
Work through crimes in the order they are presented, levelling each to 100 before moving on.
Jumping into harder crimes too early usually results in more failures, slower experience gain, and delayed nerve growth. Success rate matters far more than payout early on.
If your maximum nerve is increasing, your crime progression is on track.
📚 CRIME GUIDES BY EMFORUS [2535044]
There are detailed guides covering each crime and its unique nuances provided by Emforus [2535044].
Crime Enhancers are items that improve your effectiveness when committing crimes in Torn City. Once owned, an enhancer provides its bonus permanently while it is in your inventory of items.
Crime enhancers are readily available from the Item Market, where they can be purchased from other players. Enhancers can also be obtained for free as unique outcomes from committing crimes.
Crime enhancers are a good idea as soon as you can afford the correct one for the crime you are focusing on.
THE BENEFITS
✓ Less wasted nerve ✓ Faster Crime Experience gain ✓ Quicker increases to your maximum nerve
Because nerve growth compounds over time, improving crime success early has long-term benefits.
🎓 EDUCATION
Education is an important long-term system in Torn City, taking over 6 years without reduction perks to complete.
NEVER LEAVE YOUR EDUCATION SLOT EMPTY. You can only study one course at a time. Every day with nothing studying is progress you cannot recover.
Education affects almost every part of the game, including training efficiency, crime success, fighting ability, and access to advanced content later on. Many of these bonuses are subtle, but they compound heavily over time.
Recommended early Education path:
01. Introduction to Biology 02. Intravenous Therapy — Unlocks Blood Bags 03. Introduction to Sports Science 04. Continue Sports Science, prioritising increased Gym Gains and passive stat bonuses 05. Bachelor of Sports Science — Permanent increased gym gains 06. Return to Biology, prioritising useful Learning Outcomes 07. Bachelor of Biology — Unlocks Syringes 08. Whatever you want!
This path unlocks Blood Bags, Syringes, permanent increased Gym Gains, Damage, Medical Item effectiveness and more. By the time this is achieved, you will likely understand what you want to focus on next.
Company Ownership? Fighting Perks? Gym Gains? Crime Progression? The choice is yours.
🏅 AWARDS, HONORS & MERIT POINTS
In Torn City, Awards and Honors are one of the fastest ways for a new player to gain Merit Points, and they should be actively pursued early.
Many early awards are easy to obtain through normal play. While honors themselves are cosmetic, the merit points they grant are extremely valuable.
Merit Points are spent on permanent perks. Each perk can be upgraded up to 10 times, with the cost increasing by +1 merit per upgrade, for a total of 55 merits to fully max a perk.
FIRST PRIORITY — EDUCATION TIME REDUCTION Reducing education time early allows you to complete more courses over the lifetime of your account.
After Education Reduction:
IF FINANCIALLY ESTABLISHED Consider maxing Bank Interest if you already have meaningful money invested in the Torn City Bank.
OTHERWISE Spend merits on Crime Progression, Life and Critical Chance.
Bank Interest provides little immediate value if you do not have money in the bank earning interest. Those merits can instead provide bonuses now to your crimes and fighting capability.
Points are the premium currency in Torn City. They are extremely powerful, highly flexible, and tightly linked to long-term progression.
While Points can be purchased with real money through opening Donator Packs, it isn't recommended. They are also actively traded between players, making them accessible with in-game currency.
POINTS CAN BE USED FOR:
◆ Daily Energy and Nerve refills ◆ Unlocking areas such as the Race Track, Stock Market and Bazaar ◆ Day trading for in-game cash on the Points Market
For new players, daily Nerve refills may not yet provide enough value. Spending 30 points to refill a 15 maximum nerve bar is very different from refilling a 50 maximum nerve bar for the same cost.
ENERGY REFILLS ARE DIFFERENT. Developing a routine of refilling Energy daily should be a priority once you can sustain the cost. A missed refill is Energy you will never get back.
Points have a fluctuating cash value set by players on the Points Market.
📜 MISSIONS DUKE'S SLAVE
Missions, provided by Duke, are daily tasks that guide players through core interactions in Torn City. New players will already recognise the Missions page from the tutorial missions given by George.
As you complete missions, your Standing with Duke increases. Higher standing unlocks more difficult missions, which reward more Mission Credits. The cash rewards are usually minor and should not be the focus.
Mission Credits are the real value. They can be spent in the Mission Store, which contains six rotating items available for a limited time.
WHAT TO SAVE FOR
📖 First 2,000 Mission Credits → Save for a Book 🔧 Next 2,000 Mission Credits → Save for Weapon Attachments 💥 Beyond that → Special ammunition if needed
You do not want to miss a book or weapon attachment because you cannot afford it.
🐾 FACTIONS
Factions are player-run groups in Torn City that provide powerful, permanent account-wide bonuses. Joining a faction is essential progression, not optional.
Torn has been around for a long time, and the faction landscape has changed. At a minimum, new players should aim to join a faction with the Toleration specialisation tree fully maxed. Toleration reduces drug side effects, overdose chance, and addiction gain.
Many new players join small factions that lack key perks. While they may be welcoming, they often slow account growth. Ideally, you should join the highest-respect faction willing to accept you, as higher respect means stronger bonuses across your entire account.
Factions are more than buffs. The right faction should support you, help you learn, and have an active in-game chat or Discord. It is normal to try a few factions before finding the right fit.
WHAT TO LOOK FOR
✓ Maxed Toleration as a baseline ✓ Strong faction respect and useful perks ✓ Active members and leadership ✓ People willing to help you learn
In Torn you are able to propose to and marry other players, and there are a few notable benefits for doing so.
⚠️ CHOOSE CAREFULLY Some elements of marriage give your spouse access to shared property-related features, so choosing someone you trust is important.
Having a spouse allows you to Move In together and share the associated cost of maintaining upkeep and rent on your Private Island, essentially halving the expense.
Most importantly are the time-gated Honors, Medals and rewarded Merit Points which require remaining married without divorce.
LONG-TERM MILESTONE Receiving all available marriage Merit Points, Medals and Honor Bars requires 2,000 consecutive days married to one person.
HOW TO GET MARRIED
01. Acquire a Ring from the Item Market or Jewelry Shop. 02. Navigate to Items and select Use on the Ring. 03. Enter the player you want to propose to. 04. They receive the proposal and can Accept or Deny. 05. If accepted, both players become Engaged. 06. Both players visit the Church and invite at least one witness. 07. Once a witness accepts, both players enter their vows. 08. Use the Kiss option to seal the deal.
🧩 CHAPTER 2 WRAP-UP WHAT YOU SHOULD UNDERSTAND SO FAR
At this point, you should have a clear picture of how Torn City is meant to be played.
Progress in Torn is not about rushing, luck, or flashy decisions. It is about building strong habits early and letting systems compound over time.
✓ How Energy, Nerve and Happy form the core daily loop ✓ Why gym training and crimes must be done consistently ✓ How Level 15 unlocks real income and progression ✓ Why renting a Private Island is an efficiency upgrade ✓ How Crimes increase maximum nerve through hidden Crime Experience ✓ Why Education should never sit idle ✓ How Awards, Honors and Merit Points accelerate long-term growth ✓ What Points are and why Energy refills matter ✓ Why Missions are about credits rather than cash ✓ How Factions fundamentally shape your account ✓ Why being Married can benefit both players
None of these systems work in isolation. They are designed to support each other.
If you are spending your bars, keeping education running, earning merits, managing points carefully, completing missions, and sitting in a strong faction, you are already ahead of most new players.
From here on, the guide will start building on these foundations rather than introducing new ones.
Torn rewards players who do the simple things, every day.
CHAPTER 03 🔎 THE FINER DETAILS OPTIMISING THE SYSTEMS YOU NOW UNDERSTAND
⏱️ COOLDOWNS DRUGS • BOOSTERS • MEDICAL
Before using drugs or boosters, you need to understand Cooldowns. In Torn City, cooldowns control how often you can use powerful consumables and prevent you from stacking them endlessly.
💊 DRUG COOLDOWN Limits how often you can take drugs. After taking one, you must wait for its cooldown to expire before taking another.
🍺 BOOSTER COOLDOWN Shared by Energy Drinks, Alcohol, Candy and similar items. Boosters can be stacked until you reach your maximum available Booster Cooldown.
🏥 MEDICAL COOLDOWN Limits the use of medical items such as First Aid Kits, Morphine and Blood Bags.
Faction perks can increase your maximum Booster Cooldown, allowing you to use more boosters within a single session.
💡 YOU CAN EXCEED THE MAXIMUM
Booster and Medical Cooldown can be pushed over your listed maximum by one item's worth of cooldown.
To do this, your cooldown must first be below the maximum. You can then consume another item even if that item's cooldown pushes the resulting total beyond your normal cap.
Once over the cap, you must wait until the cooldown falls below your maximum before another item can be used.
EXAMPLE — PUSHING BOOSTER COOLDOWN ABOVE MAXIMUM
▼
😊 HAPPY & GYM GAINS
Happy can be heavily boosted using items such as Candy and Erotic DVDs, allowing significantly stronger gym gains — especially early in your account.
Your listed Maximum Happy is not a true hard cap. Happy can be boosted as high as 99,999.
THE 15-MINUTE RULE
If your Happy is above its natural maximum, it will reset back down on the next natural Happy tick:
XX:00 • XX:15 • XX:30 • XX:45
If you are going to manipulate Happy for additional gym gains, stockpile your Energy beforehand and use your Happy items immediately after a 15-minute tick. This gives you the largest window possible to spend your Energy before the next reset.
Happy acts as a gym training multiplier. It does not generate battle stats itself — it increases the gains produced by the Energy you spend.
Heavy Happy manipulation can be extremely efficient at lower battle stats. Common training regimes include Candy Jumps, Happy Jumps using Erotic DVDs, and — for the extremely wealthy — Poison Mistletoe and 99k Happy services.
Drugs are one of the most powerful progression tools in Torn City. Most importantly, several drugs provide additional Energy, which can be converted directly into more gym training and faster battle-stat growth.
XANAX
Provides 250 Energy with roughly a 6–8 hour Drug Cooldown. Competitive players commonly aim for around three Xanax per day.
Drug use comes with side effects, addiction and the possibility of overdose. These risks are reduced substantially by a faction with a fully developed Toleration specialisation tree.
⚠️ OVERDOSE
Every drug carries an overdose chance. An overdose can hospitalise you, increase your cooldown and apply temporary negative effects depending on the drug.
A NOTE ON DRUG-FREE PLAY
It is possible to avoid Xanax and Ecstasy to eventually unlock the Sports Science Lab. This is a valid specialist path, but it sacrifices years of drug-assisted Energy and training progression.
📊 STAT BUILDS & THE MODERN META
A stat build is not simply about winning fights. It is about training efficiency, special gym access and long-term growth.
A common modern training strategy is to heavily favour one defensive stat — either Defense or Dexterity — while maintaining the other core stats according to a planned ratio and intentionally leaving one defensive stat behind.
🛡️ DEFENSE-HEAVY Rarely dodge, but mitigate incoming damage. Generally less dependent on RNG.
🦋 DEXTERITY-HEAVY Avoid more attacks, but the hits that connect hurt considerably more. More dependent on RNG.
Both approaches are viable. Once you commit heavily to one path, changing later can be slow and expensive.
EARLY GAME: Consistency matters more than choosing a perfect ratio. Balanced training keeps your options open while you establish regular drug use, refills and better gym access.
A Balanced Build trains Strength, Defense, Speed and Dexterity evenly, producing fewer obvious weaknesses and more consistent direct-combat performance.
THE TRADE-OFF
Balanced builds sacrifice some training efficiency because Energy is distributed across all four battle stats. Ratio builds can exploit special gyms and exponential gains more efficiently, allowing them to become larger sooner.
Balanced builds trade growth speed for combat consistency.
⚔️ COMBAT — HOW FIGHTING WORKS
Combat is determined by four battle stats. Winning is not about total stats alone — it is about how your stats compare relative to your opponent's.
💪 STRENGTH Determines how much damage you deal and is directly opposed by Defense.
🛡️ DEFENSE Reduces incoming damage and is directly opposed by Strength.
⚡ SPEED Determines your ability to land attacks and is directly opposed by Dexterity.
🦋 DEXTERITY Determines your ability to dodge attacks and is directly opposed by Speed.
Weapon Accuracy further modifies your chance to connect. Even with favourable battle stats, inaccurate weapons will miss more often.
THE SIMPLE VERSION
Strength → How hard you hit Defense → How much damage you absorb Speed → Whether you hit Dexterity → Whether you get hit
🛒 ITEM MARKET & TRADING
The Item Market is where Torn's real player-driven economy exists. Unlike NPC shops, prices are set by players and move according to supply and demand.
Many items have a fixed NPC purchase price but a completely different player-market value. This difference is where much of Torn's early trading profit comes from.
PRICES CAN MOVE BECAUSE OF:
Events Wars Supply & demand Point-price movement Changes in player behaviour
Trading rewards players who pay attention. An item that is profitable today may not be profitable tomorrow.
⚠️ EARLY TRADING — BUY-MUGGING
Other players can purchase your listed items and immediately attack you in an attempt to mug some of the cash they just paid you. This is commonly known as Buy-Mugging.
Newer players can reduce this risk by selling valuable items to established, reputable mug-free Traders. No method is completely risk-free, but established traders generally depend heavily on maintaining their reputation.
🛡️ PROTECTING YOUR MONEY
Any cash sitting openly in your wallet can potentially be mugged. As your income increases, protecting money becomes almost as important as earning it.
👻 GHOST TRADES Cash placed inside an open trade is temporarily removed from your wallet, protecting it from mugging while the trade remains open.
🏥 SELF-HOSPITALISATION Deliberately hospitalising yourself prevents normal attacks and mugging while you are inactive.
If using self-hospitalisation, remember to set Revives → No One in your General Settings.
A COMMON SELLING ROUTINE
01. Turn Revives off. 02. List your items or open your Bazaar. 03. Self-hospitalise. 04. Open a trade with someone you trust. 05. Sell your items. 06. Move the resulting wallet cash into the trade. 07. Leave hospital and close your Bazaar. 08. Wait before retrieving the money. 09. Retrieve and store the funds elsewhere.
Longer-term storage options include a Private Island Vault, your own Company or Faction, or depositing money into your faction vault and requesting withdrawals from leadership when required.
🧱 STORING CASH IN ITEMS
Another way to protect excess cash is to convert it into items. Items cannot be mugged, and high-demand items can usually be converted back into cash quickly.
XANAX A common example because it has persistent demand, relatively stable value and direct personal usefulness.
Treat this as temporary storage rather than a guaranteed investment. Market prices can always move.
🐖 PIGGY BANK
Early missions provide a one-time opportunity to obtain a Piggy Bank.
You can deposit money into it repeatedly, and money stored inside is protected from mugging.
THE CATCH
The only way to retrieve the money is to break the Piggy Bank.
You receive all stored money at once, and the Piggy Bank is permanently destroyed.
Because it is a one-time item, some players use it as temporary early-game protection while others preserve it as a collectible.
🏢 JOBS & WORKING STATS
Early in Torn, the tutorial encourages you into one of three basic jobs: Army, Casino or Grocery. These introduce the job system rather than serving as ideal long-term careers.
Jobs increase three separate Working Stats:
🔨 Manual Labor 🧠 Intelligence 🫀 Endurance
Working Stats are completely separate from battle stats. They determine which job positions and player-owned companies you can access later.
🎓 NPC CAREERS — THE ONES THAT MATTER
Three NPC career paths provide meaningful permanent benefits after reaching their highest position:
⚖️ LAW Provides a permanent crime-related benefit.
🏥 MEDICAL Unlocks the ability to Revive other players using Energy.
🎓 EDUCATION Provides a permanent Education-time reduction.
The difficulty is that reaching the highest positions requires substantial Working Stats.
THE GENERAL STRATEGY Leave Army, Grocery or Casino for a player-owned Company as soon as practical. Return to Law, Medical and Education later when your Working Stats allow you to progress rapidly through them.
Player-owned Companies are where Working Stats begin to have serious value. Compared with basic NPC jobs, companies can provide substantially faster Working Stat development and powerful industry-specific perks.
Your Working Stats determine which positions you qualify for, while the Company's Star Rating determines which industry perks are unlocked.
GOOD EARLY INDUSTRIES
Sweet Shop • Grocery Store • Adult Novelties • Candle Shop • Firework Stand • Hair Salon • Flower Shop • Cruise Line • Restaurant
You can look for vacancies in Trade Chat or browse companies through the Newspaper → Find Jobs.
Higher-star companies unlock more powerful perks. Directors can also directly Train employees, accelerating Working Stat development.
THE GOAL: Get into the strongest company that will realistically employ you, then use the improved Working Stat growth to qualify for increasingly valuable positions.
🚗 RACING
Torn has its own Race Track where players can enlist vehicles, install modifications and compete across different tracks and terrain.
Access begins by purchasing a Driver's Licence from the Points Building, which unlocks the Raceway.
RACING SKILL Improves by participating in races.
DRIVING CLASS Determines which vehicles you can race.
RACING POINTS Earned through Official Events and used for class progression and vehicle modifications.
Official Event rewards:
🥇 1st — 3 Racing Points 🥈 2nd — 2 Racing Points 🥉 3rd — 1 Racing Point
Custom Events do not award Racing Points, but they do provide Racing Skill. Long custom races are commonly used to gain skill passively while away from the game.
🔑 API KEYS THIRD-PARTY TOOLS & ACCOUNT DATA
Torn provides an Application Programming Interface (API) that allows external tools, websites, scripts, spreadsheets and bots to retrieve approved game data.
Access is controlled using API Keys. Each key is linked to your account and grants an external service permission to retrieve data according to that key's access level.
PUBLIC KEY Primarily publicly available information.
MINIMAL KEY Limited personal account information.
LIMITED KEY Wider access to personal and account-related information.
FULL ACCESS KEY Access to almost all information made available through the API.
🔒 API SECURITY
Create a separate API key for each service and provide only the lowest access level required. Never post API keys publicly.
API keys do not allow a third-party service to directly play your account, but exposed information can still reveal battle stats, wealth, inventory or activity patterns.
Regularly review your active keys and revoke anything you no longer use.
🧩 CHAPTER 3 WRAP-UP FROM PLAYING TORN TO UNDERSTANDING TORN
Chapter 2 established the habits that make an account grow. Chapter 3 explains the systems that allow you to make those habits more efficient.
✓ Understand Drug, Booster and Medical Cooldowns ✓ Use Happy intelligently when training ✓ Understand the benefits and risks of Drugs ✓ Begin thinking about your long-term Stat Build ✓ Understand how the four battle stats interact in Combat ✓ Learn how Torn's Item Market creates trading opportunities ✓ Protect your cash from Mugging ✓ Build your Working Stats through better employment ✓ Move toward useful Player-Owned Companies ✓ Understand the basics of Racing ✓ Use API Keys safely with third-party tools
You do not need to optimise every one of these systems immediately. Torn rewards accounts that improve gradually and consistently.
The basics build your account. The finer details make those basics efficient.
CHAPTER 04 💰 WHAT THE WORLD REVOLVES AROUND MONEY • INCOME • INVESTING • TRADING
💵 MONEY & PASSIVE INCOME BUILDING THE ENGINE THAT FUNDS YOUR ACCOUNT
In Torn City, almost everything ultimately revolves around money. Stats, drugs, travel, items and efficiency all scale with how much cash you can generate — and how well you protect it.
One of the first things worth building is passive income. Passive income will not make you rich overnight, but it stabilises your account and reduces the pressure to constantly grind or take unnecessary risks.
THE GOAL IS STABILITY
Reliable income allows you to keep training, buying drugs, investing and progressing without constantly wondering where your next few million dollars will come from.
Passive income comes from systems working in the background — including Bank Investments, Stocks, Companies and Faction payouts. These systems reward planning and patience rather than constant activity.
🏦 THE BANK SAFE MONEY • INTEREST • COMPOUNDING
The Bank is one of Torn's safest and most reliable passive income systems. Money deposited into an active investment earns interest and cannot be mugged while locked away.
New players rarely have enough money to make enormous investments immediately — and waiting until you do only delays the benefits.
💡 EARLY-GAME APPROACH
Consider shorter 1–2 week investments. This gives you regular opportunities to reinvest a larger balance as your income grows.
Regularly reinvesting your original balance plus additional income allows your invested capital to grow over time.
As your wealth and cash flow improve, longer investment periods become more practical. Early on, flexibility and consistency are often more useful than simply chasing the highest advertised interest rate.
📈 THE STOCK MARKET BENEFITS • DIVIDENDS • ACTIVE TRADING
The Stock Market can be unlocked through the Points Building. It serves two major purposes: long-term benefits and active trading.
Many stocks provide a benefit after you own the required number of shares. These benefits can support training, income and everyday account efficiency. Some stocks also provide items or cash over time.
📦 STOCK BENEFITS Build toward a required block of shares and hold it for an ongoing benefit.
💸 PASSIVE RETURNS Some benefits provide items or cash that can be valued as ongoing income.
📊 ACTIVE TRADING Buy and sell shares based on price movement in an attempt to generate profit.
Early on, it is usually better to focus on one useful stock benefit at a time. Spreading limited capital across several unfinished benefit blocks can leave you with a lot of money invested but very little actually unlocked.
Day trading can be profitable, but it carries considerably more risk. New players can easily lose money by buying into sudden price increases or panic-selling during drops.
RETURN ON INVESTMENT — ROI
If a stock benefit regularly provides an item or cash reward, you can compare the value of those rewards against the cost of unlocking the benefit to estimate how long it may take to recover your investment.
Once you reach Level 15, flying becomes one of the most reliable income sources available to a developing account.
Travel allows you to purchase items that are unique to overseas destinations and bring them back to Torn City for resale. Plushies and Flowers are common examples because they can be purchased cheaply abroad and remain in steady demand at home.
THE LOOP
01. Fly to another country. 02. Purchase location-exclusive items. 03. Return to Torn City. 04. Sell to the Item Market or a reputable Trader. 05. Repeat.
Flying is relatively predictable and scales as your travel capacity and related perks improve. For many accounts, it becomes the backbone of early and mid-game income — funding Xanax, refills, investments and further progression.
💥 SELLING LOSSES VERY EARLY GAME ONLY
Selling losses is an early-game money-making method where stronger players pay weaker accounts to attack them and intentionally lose, helping the buyer work toward defensive awards and Merits.
EXAMPLE FROM THIS GUIDE
100 ENERGY → 4 ATTACKS ≈ $350,000 PER LOSS ≈ $1.4M PER ENERGY BAR
⚠️ THE REAL COST IS ENERGY
Every 25 Energy spent selling a loss is 25 Energy that could have permanently increased your battle stats in the gym.
For this reason, selling losses is best treated as a very early bootstrap method — potentially useful during your first day or two to establish some starting cash, but increasingly expensive to your long-term progression if continued.
🎁 GIVEAWAYS & COMMUNITY EVENTS
Not every opportunity to build wealth requires an investment. Torn's community regularly runs giveaways, competitions, raffles, trivia and mini-games offering cash and item prizes.
You should never build your financial plan around winning giveaways, but for a new account even a relatively small prize can make a meaningful difference.
🤝 ORGANISED CRIMES FACTION-BASED INCOME & CRIME PROGRESSION
Organised Crimes — OCs are faction-based crimes requiring multiple members to work together. They are not solo activities and are normally coordinated through an active faction.
Each OC requires specific roles, preparation and participation from the members assigned to it. Reliability matters because the crime depends on the team being ready.
Ranked Wars can become an extremely valuable faction-based income source. Factions participating in Ranked Wars will commonly pay members for contributing attacks and score.
At the conclusion of a Ranked War, both factions receive rewards, regardless of which side wins. A major component of these rewards comes in the form of loot-box-style Caches.
THE GENERAL PAYOUT LOOP
01. Faction completes its Ranked War. 02. Ranked War rewards and Caches are received. 03. Leadership sells or distributes the rewards. 04. Participating members receive their respective payout. 05. A portion may be retained for faction expenses and future wars.
Ranked Wars can still provide meaningful income on the losing side, particularly as faction rank and available rewards increase. Member payouts are commonly issued to your Faction Balance for withdrawal through your faction's leadership process.
🔄 TRADING ITEMS ACTIVE TRADING
Item trading is one of Torn's most time-intensive income paths. It can be profitable, but success generally comes from activity, consistency and volume rather than occasional enormous margins.
Traders advertise in Trade Chat and the Forums, negotiate deals, monitor market prices and remain available to service other players. Your reputation becomes part of the business.
📊 TOOLS & MARKET AWARENESS
External tools can make managing a trading business considerably easier.
TORN EXCHANGE Run by Ata [2507441] — commonly used for creating and maintaining public trader price lists.
Successful traders monitor market trends, item demand and economic movement. The better you understand the market, the easier it becomes to recognise opportunities — and avoid bad trades.
💰 CHAPTER 4 WRAP-UP MAKE MONEY WORK FOR YOUR ACCOUNT
Money is not the end goal in Torn. It is the resource that allows almost every other part of your account to progress faster.
✓ Put spare cash to work through the Bank ✓ Build toward useful Stock Benefits ✓ Use Flying as a reliable Level 15 income source ✓ Treat Selling Losses as a temporary early-game option ✓ Keep an eye on Giveaways & Community Events ✓ Participate reliably in faction Organised Crimes ✓ Take advantage of Ranked War income when available ✓ Consider Active Trading if you enjoy Torn's economy
The strongest accounts do not simply make money — they build systems that continually generate more of it while they focus on everything else.
Earn it. Protect it. Reinvest it. Then make your money generate more money.
Items and equipment are everywhere in Torn City, and for new players they can become overwhelming very quickly.
They drop from crimes, missions, wars, events, giveaways and more — often with very little explanation of what they actually do or how valuable they might be.
THE GOAL OF THIS CHAPTER
Understand what you're looking at before deciding whether to use it, sell it, equip it or store it.
🔍 THE ITEMS PAGE UNDERSTANDING YOUR INVENTORY
Every item in Torn falls into a category. Knowing the category immediately gives you a good indication of how that item is typically used.
The Items Page allows you to filter your inventory by these categories. Learning to use these filters makes identifying items easier and prevents a large inventory from becoming an endless page of clutter.
⚔️ EQUIPMENT CATEGORIES ITEMS THAT CAN DIRECTLY AFFECT COMBAT
📦 ALL ITEMS Every item currently in your inventory in one view.
🔫 PRIMARY WEAPONS Weapons that can be equipped in your Primary slot.
🗡️ MELEE WEAPONS Weapons equipped in your Melee slot.
SLASHING • CLUBBING • PIERCING • MECHANICAL
💣 TEMPORARY WEAPONS Combat items equipped in your Temporary slot.
SYRINGES • GRENADES • UTILITY
Temporary items can dramatically influence a fight. Some increase your own stats, some deal damage, while others reduce an opponent's stats to shift the fight in your favour.
🛡️ ARMOUR Equipment that can be worn in your Armour slots to reduce incoming damage.
💊 CONSUMABLES & PROGRESSION
👕 CLOTHING Cosmetic clothing items. Dress however you want.
🏥 MEDICAL Items used to reduce hospital time, restore Life, remove radiation or fill Empty Blood Bags.
💊 DRUGS Consumable drugs with their own effects, side effects, addiction gain and overdose penalties.
⚡ ENERGY DRINKS Consumed to provide Energy in exchange for Booster Cooldown.
🍺 ALCOHOL Consumed to provide Nerve in exchange for Booster Cooldown.
🍬 CANDY Consumables used to temporarily increase Happy.
🚀 BOOSTERS A broad category containing powerful consumables with many different effects — including Happy increases, Jail reduction, Education reduction, Energy and Stat Enhancers.
💎 STAT ENHANCERS
Among the most notable Booster items are Stat Enhancers — SEs. These increase a specific battle stat by 1% of its current total.
Because the gain scales with your existing stat, these become extraordinarily powerful for end-game accounts where a single enhancer may represent days, weeks or even months of conventional training.
📦 OTHER ITEM CATEGORIES
🎁 SUPPLY PACKS Packages containing other items. Their contents may be worth more or less than the unopened pack itself.
Parcels and Wrapped Presents can also be created by players using an Empty Box and can contain up to 10 items.
⚠️ UNKNOWN PACKAGES Be careful opening packages from people you do not trust. Players can hide items inside them that negatively affect Energy or Happy — or even put you in Hospital.
🧩 ENHANCERS Items providing benefits to Crimes.
🛠️ TOOLS Items used in Crimes and Organised Crimes.
🧱 MATERIALS Consumable materials used during Crimes.
💍 JEWELRY Cosmetic jewelry. Rings can also be used to propose to another player.
🌹 FLOWERS Flowers purchased overseas are regularly traded. A complete international flower set can be exchanged through the Museum for Points once the required Education is unlocked.
🧸 PLUSHIES Like Flowers, complete sets of overseas Plushies can be exchanged through the Museum for Points.
🏺 ARTIFACTS Items that can be found on the City map after unlocking the relevant Education.
📚 BOOKS Books can come from Subscriber rewards, the City map and Mission Store.
You can only read each Book once. Many players therefore store valuable Books safely in their Display Case until they intend to use them.
⭐ SPECIAL A broad category containing unusual and sometimes extremely powerful items — including Happy manipulation and Business Class Tickets.
❓ MISCELLANEOUS Miscellaneous items that either have no current purpose or may be associated with other game systems and future uses.
🧠 WHAT TO DO WITH AN ITEM
Most items ultimately leave you with three choices:
USE IT — Training, Crimes, combat or progression.
SELL IT — Convert it into immediate cash.
STORE IT — Keep it for later use or potential value.
New players often immediately sell items without understanding their long-term usefulness. Spend a moment researching an unfamiliar item before getting rid of it.
💲 READING ITEM INFORMATION
BUY The price charged by an NPC or overseas store when the item can be directly purchased from the game.
SELL The amount an NPC will pay you for the item. Items that cannot be sold this way display N/A.
VALUE The average price the item has recently sold for through the player economy, including the Item Market and Bazaars.
CIRC The number of that item currently in circulation within Torn's economy.
DON'T CONFUSE VALUE WITH GUARANTEED SALE PRICE
Market conditions change. Use the item's market history and current listings to understand whether now is actually a good time to sell.
🛡️ ARMOUR — THE BASICS
Armour introduces another layer of equipment complexity. Three values are particularly important:
ARMOUR How much incoming damage the piece can mitigate when the protected area is hit.
COVERAGE Which areas of the body are protected by the piece.
QUALITY How strong that item's rolled values are relative to the possible range for that item.
ARMOUR VALUE
Armour Value represents the percentage of damage mitigated when a hit lands on an area protected by that piece. In the Combat Gloves example, an Armour Value of 38.97 means the gloves mitigate 38.97% of damage when their protected area is hit.
COVERAGE VALUE
Coverage determines which areas of your body receive that protection. Hovering over Coverage displays the specific body areas protected by the equipment.
QUALITY VALUE
Quality represents how good the item's stat rolls are relative to the possible range for that particular piece. A higher Quality percentage means the item rolled toward the stronger end of its potential values.
🛡️ RANKED WAR ARMOUR
Ranked War armour takes standard armour further by introducing special defensive bonuses, survivability effects and potential synergy with different combat roles.
These sets can become extremely expensive and specialised. They are not necessary for a new account, but understanding their existence helps prevent expensive mistakes later.
🗡️ MELEE — THE BASICS
DAMAGE The weapon's base Damage value before other modifiers are applied.
ACCURACY The weapon's base Accuracy value used when determining whether an attack lands.
STEALTH Influences your ability to perform a Stealthed attack. If successful, your opponent may not know who attacked them. Quieter weapons generally have better Stealth than loud or cumbersome weapons.
QUALITY A rating based on how strongly the weapon's Damage and Accuracy rolled compared with its possible ranges.
🔫 GUNS — THE BASICS
Firearms use the same Damage, Accuracy, Stealth and Quality values covered above, but introduce several additional properties.
AMMO The number of magazines and rounds available to the weapon during combat.
RATE OF FIRE How many rounds are fired each time the weapon is used during a combat turn.
CALIBER The ammunition type required by that weapon.
⚔️ RANKED WAR WEAPONS WEAPON BONUSES & TIERS
Ranked War weapons introduce another major layer of equipment depth. Unlike standard weapons, they can roll special bonuses that dramatically alter how a weapon performs.
Bonuses can potentially:
🎯 Improve Accuracy 💥 Increase Damage ⚡ Restore Energy ⭐ Increase Respect earned 📉 Reduce enemy stats 📈 Increase your own stats ➕ And much more
Not every bonus is equally valuable. Certain bonuses also synergise much better with particular weapon types, armour, temporary items and battle-stat builds.
RANKED WAR TIERS
Ranked War weapons are separated into coloured tiers:
YELLOW → ORANGE → RED
Higher tiers provide access to stronger bonus rolls, but the specific bonus and how well it complements the weapon can matter just as much as its colour.
As you spend more time in Torn City, you will quickly realise that many experienced players rely on external tools and scripts to improve usability, visibility and efficiency.
These tools do not replace actually playing Torn. Instead, they can present information more clearly, reduce unnecessary friction and add useful quality-of-life features to the game.
WHAT THIS CHAPTER COVERS
Some of the most common and widely used tools available to Torn players, along with what you need to start using them.
⚙️ REQUIREMENTS — USERSCRIPT MANAGERS THE FIRST STEP FOR BROWSER SCRIPTS
Many Torn userscripts require a userscript manager to function.
These are browser extensions that allow compatible custom scripts to run on Torn pages, providing additional information, interface improvements and quality-of-life features.
🔧 TAMPERMONKEY One of the most commonly used userscript managers.
TornPDA is a mobile-focused Torn companion app designed to make regular play from your phone significantly easier.
KEY FEATURES
⚡ Fast access to important game features 🔔 Notifications for Energy, Nerve, cooldowns and events 📱 A mobile-optimised interface for everyday Torn play
For players who check Torn frequently throughout the day, TornPDA is extremely convenient and can replace conventional mobile browser play almost entirely.
For Android users wanting access to browser extensions and Torn userscripts from their phone, Yandex Browser and Kiwi Browser have traditionally been popular options.
MOBILE SCRIPT SUPPORT
🌐 Chrome-style browser extensions 🔧 Userscript managers such as Tampermonkey 📜 Torn userscripts normally associated with desktop browsers
This gives Android players another way to access many of the same quality-of-life scripts available to desktop users.
⚠️ A QUICK WORD ON USERSCRIPTS
A userscript is still code being run inside your browser. Do not blindly install every script you come across simply because somebody posted it.
Stick to established community tools where possible, read the associated forum thread, check what the script actually does and be cautious with scripts from unknown sources.
📜 FINAL NOTE ON TOOLS & SCRIPTS
The tools covered here are only a small snapshot of what exists around Torn City.
There are hundreds of public and private scripts developed by members of the community to solve specific problems, display additional information or optimise particular playstyles.
The range of functionality is far too broad to fully document in a single beginner's guide. As this project continues, I may expand this chapter with specific widely used or highly recommended scripts where it makes sense.
🔎 WANT TO EXPLORE MORE?
Developers regularly release scripts, advertise services, publish updates and gather feedback in Torn's dedicated forum section.
CHAPTER 07 📌 CONCLUSION THE END OF THE GUIDE • NOT THE END OF THE JOURNEY
🐾 FINAL WORDS FOR NOW...
If you've made it this far, you already understand something important about Torn City:
There is no single "right" way to play Torn. But there are better foundations to build on.
This guide was never meant to be exhaustive, and it was never meant to turn Torn into a checklist.
It exists to help new and returning players avoid the most common time-wasters, misunderstandings and early mistakes that can quietly set an account back months or even years.
Beyond that, the path you take is entirely your own.
📖 A LIVING PROJECT
This guide will remain a living project.
As Torn continues to evolve — and as I continue playing — I plan to expand on systems we have only touched briefly, update advice where the meta shifts, and add deeper breakdowns where they make sense.
🔄 Existing information will be updated as Torn changes.
📚 More advanced topics may be expanded into deeper sections.
🧭 New systems will be added where they are useful to developing players.
💬 HELP MAKE THIS GUIDE BETTER
If there's something you feel is missing, something you're confused about, or a system you think deserves more attention, I genuinely want to hear it.
Feel free to reach out to me through Torn Mail or DMs with suggestions, questions or feedback.
If it helps players understand Torn better, it belongs here.
Torn rewards CONSISTENCY • PATIENCE • CURIOSITY
If this guide helped you find your footing, understand the game a little better, or simply saved you some time, then it has done exactly what I hoped it would.
I was about to say: "Get the heck outta here, we already have Baldr's Guide", but you nailed it. And the pictures are a nice touch. I'm looking forward to whatever else you might publish. R+
