Do you spend IRL money on torn?

something that popped in my head wondering after 12+ years in torn and barely having any free cash ( mostly due to my imescapable urge to buy and open caches ), I considered buying a few donator packs to resell. 

after checking out the markets I noticed some players hold ALOT of donator packs to sell, 129 is the most worth about £380 in real money. Do many of you buy things with your money for in game outside of subscription? 

You would be surprised on the amount some people spent here. Those blue named people are either crazy rich or just crazy.

I mean over the course of almost a decade I probably donated anywhere between 5-10k usd . Probably because it was a way for me to gamble via poker without actually losing thousands and thousands of irl dollars. Coincidental thru torn is how I figured out I have a bad proclivity for gambling hence why I stayed away from Vegas and Atlantic City for my entire life. So that’s a small price to pay for that. Plus I got some pixel money allowing me to play. Although I don’t know how I feel about people donating $100k or $30k like some new HOF starters do but if you got 30$k to burn and it wouldn’t break your bank who am I to tell  successful people how to spend their hard earned money?

I get that, recently I’ve noticed how bad I’ve got for small time gambling like scratch cards, I do love a gamble, but for probably the same reasons as you I feel like gambling in pixel money definitely feels less dangerous than real money. In a way it helps us realise that we may have a small  or big problem.

Real life poker can definitely be dangerous if you chase the win, losing everything in worst cases, so I get what you are saying a small price to pay. I put 120m on a football bet that whilst the odds were 4/1 I felt it was a banker. Of course it lost lol, but in a short space of time I’d gotten over it. However if that was £120 in real money it would sting a lot longer.

Everyone has their reasons I guess, I doubt I’d ever spend major money on the game even if I had a lot irl, but I suppose I’d find other worse ways to spend it instead 

As I get older I fell the same I find better ways to spend my money. Like travel. 

No. I believe spending money ruins the joy of slowly growing your account.

Every year I've spent my Christmas bonus on DPs. I make sure everything in RL is already paid for and its only gonna get pissed up a wall otherwise anyway. 

Just a monthly subscription. Which is less than few beers.

I think spending real life money on the game is fine as long as it's done within what you can comfortably afford. 

Consider this.....

You start playing golf. You really enjoy it. Now, You can spend the next 10 years, grinding it out and eventually become good......or, you can buy the best clubs that you can afford and how you're a local pro to teach you the game and accelerate that process for you.

I view Torn in the same way. If spending some money increases your enjoyment of the game, then there's nothing wrong with that. 

Doesn't make much sense outside books, and at that point one shouldn't kid themselves that they're paying specifically for books. Donor Pack:Torn economy ratio allows for ease of purchase within 1 month of play.

If I go to dinner with my better half we enjoy ourselves for an hour or so.  Now a days that can easily break 100$.  A week later the food is gone, good memories remain but it's just a nice dinner.   We like to try restaurants and used to see a lot of movies too.

if i spend 100$ here, a week later i still have it and it continues to make new memories until i grow tired of this game.

Don't spend what you don't have and don't just gamble it away and the entertainment return per dollar is actually remarkably high.   Just understand what your buying,  it's not a win or an investment it's just spending disposal income.   

Once spent here it loses all financial value.   Even in a game where you could sell the account people get pennies on the dollar. 

I was shocked when I saw I had a blue name to choose lol. Over a year and a half I somehow spent $1k. But I don't regret it at all. When I enjoy a game, I love giving back to those who created the game and those who keep it going. I dont know if donator pack sales go toward paying salaries or if it's just to keep server(s) running etc., but I'm happy to give back in that way. 

I used my donator packs to help my faction, help new players, and I also used a vast majority of them to get both biz stocks I needed so I could run my biz. 

I've put money into app games, laptop games, real life games (not gambling). I put money into collections, buying experiences, souvenirs, etc. I believe if someone gets pure enjoyment from things, there's no harm in using money to get memories or to show appreciation or to do a little better in a game, or what-have-you. Some look crosseyed at those who pay money for things but if you're sincerely enjoying an experience and decide to utilize money to add to the experience or show gratitude, where's the harm?

Real life works much the same way as Torn.

If your net worth in Torn was 1B, you would not blow the entire 1B on cans. That would be a poor decision, you would be far better off investing in stocks/bank. But if your net worth was 50B, spending on cans might only represent 2.5 percent of what you have. That loss is acceptable because you can recover it far more quickly.

The same logic applies in real life. Someone stacking shelves or working a minimum wage job would be unwise to spend £1,000 on donator packs. That money is essential to them.

For someone fortunate enough to have a well paid job, that same £1,000 can simply be disposable income. It is play money, not money needed to survive.

Ultimately, it is all relative to what people earn and what they already have.

I buy a DP for every hour of OT I put in at work. 

(Or rather, I set aside for it and purchase at the best possible value once I have enough of them 'stocked up')

Rewarding myself with frivolous things helps keep me motivated when I'm otherwise stressed from overwork.
