This is a perspective I have never considered... Its terrible one part of the country is making such a huge economic sacrifice and not being compensated for it in some other way. I wonder if its ever been floated to provide some kind of relief in some other way to counter this huge deficit of work opportunities?

That's a good point. The Pacific is vast and we don't control the canals, so strategically, that makes sense to an extent.

I'd love to see the Pebble project take off, actually. That would be so good for American production. There's contention around the fisheries in the area, but there are plenty of conflicting reports on the ecological impact.

I think you're right that China is more focused on Taiwan right now, but I wouldn't go so far as to say it's impossible.

The war between Russia and Ukraine is wild. Russia are running into similar problems we did in the Vietnam war. The fleet would be noticed, but I'd wager that Russia will test reactions by pressing, as they do, and test to see if anyone would actually hit them while they bring their fleets.

Serious discussion? If Trump is in pocket of Russia, with Trumps to cause friction in NATO, and distract NATO from Russia reopened old Arctic bases. The one problem for Russia is NATO.

Edit: If the USA breaks the alliance/trust with Denmark, then Russia can go unchallenged by the USA in the Arctic region.

Reasoning 2 makes no sense. 

The US has bases on Greenland. Greenland is large and very lightly populated. 

The US can trivially work with Denmark to add more bases. (not anymore though lol)

Denmark is(was) highly bought into NATO, sending troops into the GWOT and having had them come back in boxes.

Military access was never a concern.

Trump wants Greenland for the mineral wealth. As such he should have made a financial offer for it. The end. 

Trunp knows this and could easily offer money. But he isn't.

I don't see how a one time lump sum would make up for the benefits the Greenlanders have from living in a socialized democracy, health care. maternity leave, paternity leave, subsidized childcare, free college etc. (high tax but actual benefits from the tax)

The argument that NATO cant keep it safe as an alliance but one partner in the alliance will do a better job, that's just weird. (Next he needs Svalbard, Iceland and Norway to feel safe?)  

He don't believe in climate chage  that ice isn't gonna melt with out a little faith, Lot of drill baby drill to get to the minerals under the ice, lacking infrastructure will make it a costly endeavor anyhow. Oil isn't gonna be as profitable forever (we pump as much as we can and sell it fast as we can to get the most value here in Norway) :P

Pretty sure he whonts Greenland mostly as a legacy building mean. Same as with the Nobel peace prize.

You’re adding agency that doesn’t exist. 

Greenland, which is semi-autonomous, already has internal political factions that want full autonomy. There is no reason to assume that they would welcome an invading foreign superpower with open arms. How would you feel if any other country in the world decided it wanted control of the United States? The default response is unhappy. The population of Greenland is just over 50k, the size of a larger town (which means it is unlikely you'll get a response from a Greenlandic person, both between this being the English web and a niche forum).

A 100K citizen buyout would be insultingly low considering both the cost of living up north and the fact that that's probably less money at the end of the day compared to a single major infrastructure project. Being a vassal state of a country with no social welfare state for its own people would be a drastic quality of life dip in a place that already has to deal with a world that doesn't answer to the uniqueness of northern and remote issues.

I think Greenland plays an important role in the security of the western hemisphere, and that's why Trump wants it.  I think Trump is realigning the USA to a more locally concentrated power and a less globalized power.  This is quite important given the rise of Chinese power and our failure to contain China.  The Chinese genie is essentially out of the bottle at this point, and we can't really put it back in.

We're spread out around the whole globe, acting as the only major player at the moment.  But China is becomming a major player.  Europe has lagged behind ever since the end of WWII because they've been happy to take our military support and focus on economic development and social programs.

I think the reason Europe wants to keep Greenland is exactly for that reason - that Europe wants to continue getting American military support against her enemies, and Greenland is part of the leverage they use to keep America vested in Europe's security.  Eisenhower seems to have predicted exactly this flaw in the dynamic of the NATO alliance.

Denmark only has Greenland because the USA occupied and defended Greenland in WWII, and was magnanimous enough to return it to Denmark after our British allies liberated Denmark from the Nazis.  Denmark gave no resistance to the Nazis initially, and rather surrendered within hours.

Denmark also instituted a program of forced sterilization of Greenland natives as recently as the 60s-70s.  So they haven't exactly been great stewards and benefactors of the people of Greenland.

Either way, Greenland is a key strategic security interest to the western hemisphere, and Denmark has been resistant or slow to support the kind of expanded military presence the USA believes is necessary.

I understand the optics the left is trying to put on this whole thing, framing it as a land grab by a dictator, but there are very real reasons for the tensions amid the backdrop of the shifting balance of global power.
