Think it's more people were hating on Oman for what he did here and you claimed people were after him because they don't like him. Outside of this incident he was generally extremely well liked, so to claim prior hatred is why people are out to get him is a bit of of touch.

This shit is still pretty horrific..
Gonna be hard to try and remove this image from my brain 🧠
Hey,
The purpose of the API was never to provide an unfair advantage and this might've been an oversight on my side.
I'll work on adding a global cache (which cannot be bypassed) to the bounties related API as well, since various discord bots/pings should not have an advantage over players who are actually playing the game.
That said, Josh has been doing some amazing behind-the-scenes optimizations to the caching logic recently, so I might be able to implement a proper 30s delay to the item market API (or some other API's) rather than relying solely on the global cache, which should nerf mug bots slightly more.
Thanks for bringing this up!
amazing work .thank you !!
Every time script monkeys taunt honest players they lose more advantages.
Script monkeys in shambles now!! Great job splent.
At the risk of the answer being blatantly obvious. Why can’t the api just be static information which updates once a day?
If it’s truly there to help people with information gathering etc why does it need to be live or even 30 second delay?
If you want live information on bounties or 30 second information on bounties go check the page every 30 seconds. If you want to check if someone is out of hosp go check their page and so on and so on.
The api seems to have moved to being more valuable than actually playing the game with your own eyes.
Now we just need to get rid of the quick deposit scripts, instant item use scripts and ability to do ghost trades to make trading require some skill again. Then we're at an equillebirum!
Can you not just remove item market & bounties from the API system? I’m a dumbass with tech stuff but people have explained to me you can pretty much decide what info gets dragged for their bots.
Mug bots don’t need nerfing, they need eliminating mate.
^^^^^^^
Killing the API wont just stop mugging, it stops anything except your eyes from seeing the market at all.
Mugbots die, which is good. Dealbots also die, because they're essentially the same, good or bad depending on your view.
Something that I think everyone would agree is a massive loss if the API is killed? No more TornW3b. Bazaars are completely dead, and all we're left with is Market 2.0. If you think its a necessary evil, whatever, that's fair. I think its very easy to go "just turn off the API" though, without considering other knock on effects.
I’m for people having to do the work themselves instead of a bot or script doing it for them, that includes traders aswell as muggers.
i only discriminate against lazy bastards.
get rid IMO :)
Fair dues for being consistent with your desires at least. I've no opinion on the bots, never mugged off one, and I've only used a deal bot on a few occasions before deciding they're not for me.
That said, the thought of having to use Market 2.0 kills me. At that stage, to me, bots are a sad necessary evil. Not having TornW3b to display bazaars is a nightmare to me.
What bots you are referring to, that traders use?
Ones that ping for items under market value in bazaars and on item market
Bc then we'd have even shittier access to bazaars and the devs would have to do actual work to fix it, which ched has explicitly stated he won't do, and which will cause a rebellion by the top activity players of Torn.
We're going off topic slightly now, but I'll reply as it's related to mug-bots and unfair advantage.
There are a few reasons why the API can't just be static information which updates daily.
Lack of API, or static API in general encourage data scraping in a way, since this information is not present anywhere else. This usually results in a much higher server load compared to a specific API selections/endpoints (which return much less data in general as well). Another reason is decreased bandwidth as well (though it's not the main reason of course).
API also gives us more control and visibility of how things are being used; This doesn't mean we're unable to monitor (ab)normal on-site behaviour, but it certainly makes everything easier when you control one standardized output that everyone uses.
Additionally, many QoL features that scripts/tools/websites bring wouldn't be possible, e.g. TornTools stakeout feature, or messages/events alerts on TornPDA, faction territory movement alerts and what not.
If the API was static, I don't think daily "Fedded Archives" would be possible either (at least not without a 1 day delay).
And I would also say that API in general increases user activity and competitiveness. I consider some of this activity to be bad (e.g. mug bots), and I'd like to reduce such activities enough so that , but otherwise I think it's great that players are trying to optimize their playstyles.
Of course, some endpoints might unintentionally provide unfair advantage, so it's really important to balance things out (e.g. with delays/cache). And that is clearly stated on the API docs page:
We understand that crafting an API system for Torn could give some users an unfair advantage. We want the system to expand & enhance gameplay rather than giving users an advantage which makes it easier to compete against others. We have taken this into account during development, but we will be listening to feedback and making any appropriate changes that are required.
I hope that explains why simply removing the API might not have the desired effect.
People need to stop being lazy and treating Torn as an Idle game with extra steps, all market stuff should be updated at new day only, if people want to grab a cheap item, they need to sit and watch markets, alot of people don't or can't use scripts/bots so it's an insane advantage for those that use em, i think alot of API changes should happen because all i'm seeing is people mass abusing the API and it's wasting staffs time and the devs time trying to patch stuff and catch cheaters.
Rant over.
Sorry but your first point is that it stops people scraping but scraping is illegal, so that stops people scraping and if anything it masks scraping surely? By giving another way of getting similar data it makes it less obvious if the data was scrapped or gained via api
Secondly your post makes it clear the issue here, you keep referring to mug bots as an unfair advantage yet promote its benefit in less PvP specific scenarios.
If mug bots are an issue then trader bots are an issue, flying notification bots are an issue. You can’t say the API is good and useful and makes people more activity for PvE scenarios but an issue for PvP scenarios.
No it doesn’t explain it at all.
Why can’t you just remove API from the market pages? Keep it everywhere else if need be.
there isn’t really a balance here, you’re shagging the majority* of torn for the laziness of the few.
