Not interested in starting one but do wars ever happen on here? A couple irls got me onto this game so I don't know much other than what they've told me

Faction vs faction all the time. Called Rank Wars. Then some events like Halloweek is player vs player.
We've had a couple world wars about territories, but there are so many big alliances that we are largely at a standstill for that level of war. Faction v Faction, yeah
Adding on, (this is most likely what your RL friends are referring to) ranked wars is a part of Torn that is only available to factions. It can be a rewarding experience depending on gaming style.
There's also territories is also only available to factions.
If we broaden the term war a little, there's also the annual Halloween event where M'aol and his minions get summoned.
Hey I would suggest you join a newbie friendly faction that can show you the ropes of the game.
Wiki is also a good source of information.
