Blood donation day : Fun fact about blood donation

Hi im Tanuki I am med student who got internship in Blood bank and today i will try to write how important of blood donation.

And what the step of process during blood donation. 

Blood donation is how we draw blood to donate to patient who need.

1. to start the donator will have to take a screen first like vital sign for blood pressure and drink water to increase blood volume.
2. then you have to history screening on your health condition by do survey to make sure your blood is safe for donate like do you have risk of HIV , history of illness , take some medicine that can effect blood component , bleeding disorder 
3. After you pass all survey you will get into Screen blood room for confirm your blood group before start donate 
4. during donate process all you have to do is lay on bed and keep pumping your hand to make your venous blood flow good 
5. the blood will drawl out from you around 1 Unit which is around 150-250 cc and take some part of it for screen test 
6. After that the technician will ask you to rest on bed for 5 minute to make sure you didnt have hypovolumic symptom like dizzy faint 
7. and then take you to break room eat some snack and prescribe you with iron supplement ( which i never eat lol) 
8. and the last step is check vital sign before go out and clean your draw blood site 

it usually take you 30 minute - 1 hour and produce one unit of PRC ( pack red cell ) Whole blood which can be use for product main 3 blood components which is  Pack red cell / Platelet concentrate / Fresh frozen plasma which can safe 3 people life 

there is many patient that rely on blood to survive such as Thalassemia 

More funny is there is some disease that have to donate blood to survive ! like PV polycythemia vera that keep produce too much of blood.

Hello ! I graduated in med a few months ago. Thats nice info and great efforts but there one point, you get only 1prbc per donation which is transfused to only one person. Yes you also get different blood components like platelets and serum etc which are used for other patients. 

ah yeah nice mention i misremember from Wholeblood was i trying to said that can process them in to PRC / PLC / FFP and more thank for correction!

I only donated blood once. My friend's dad was in need of platelet donors so i volunteered. It was an interesting experience. When i arrived and was screened, they said I have to wait for 30-40 minutes because my blood pressure was too low lmao (im a night owl but the night before the blood donation i slept early idk why it was low). the other person who was donating wasn't allowed because after the health screening they found out he has high blood pressure.

So yeah after 40 minutes, they checked my BP again and everything was good and normal so we continued with the procedure. IT WAS MY FIRST TIME SEEING A NEEDLE THAT BIG LMAO and it was also weird seeing my blood in a bag. Pretty cool. I also discovered my blood type that day O+

People usually avoid eating breakfast and drinking before taking blood sample. This doesn’t apply to blood donation where you SHOULD at least drink before visiting, most places also advice eating normal breakfast.
