Citizens,
Today we’re releasing an enhanced version of the City Map, with a number of improvements designed to make it faster, clearer, and more accessible to use.
Smoother map performance
The map engine has been upgraded to the latest stable version of Leaflet.js, and we’ve moved map features over to canvas rendering. Together, these changes improve performance, reduce data transfer for map object rendering by up to 70%, and allow the map to handle more content more smoothly, including zoom animations and larger custom shape layers.
We’ve also pre-scaled map items, rackets, and radiation icons for each zoom level, and added map padding so nearby objects can be drawn just outside your current view. This means you should now see things around you more quickly while dragging the map.
Better map controls
The City Map control panel has been redesigned, and the old map pan block has been removed. We’ve also updated the copy-link panel, added copy-link functionality to faction and territory tooltips, and fixed an issue where the map view did not update when the link changed.
For those using full-map mode, you can now toggle it with the F and Esc keys.
Territory and radiation improvements
We’ve made a few improvements to how territories and radiation are displayed too. Radiation icons will now only be drawn when they do not intersect with another radiation icon, and you’ll now see an appropriate tooltip if you try to claim a territory under radiological quarantine.
We’ve also applied some minor restyling to faction tooltips, and renamed the territory F A G to XAG.
New player tutorial
A new map tutorial panel has been added for new users, to help them get to grips with the City Map more quickly. Providing an improved onboarding experience.
Accessibility improvements
We’ve also made a range of improvements for screen reader users and keyboard navigation. These include arrow key navigation across map items, factions and territories, hidden buttons for VoiceOver support, tab and arrow navigation across autocomplete, accessibility announcements for navigation, search and zoom changes, and improved popup focus handling.
This includes:
- updating map controls accessibility announcements based on their state,
- hidden buttons for zoom controls,
- screen reader announcements for search results,
- adapted popups for screen readers,
- autofocus when popups open,
- and returning focus after they close.
Thanks.
