I know for the travel update you can't bring weapons or armor. If I go to a location and buy a melee item I can use that in fights, right? If I buy a firearm can you use that in fights? How do you get ammo?

You can't use firearm as you have no ammo.
Why don’t you try reading the official announcement instead of googling for it?
