I was being bullied by some UKs in my faction because they are uncultured and I found this.

Why is the soccer ball called a soccer ball but in it's description it's called a football??

I think its funny and shouldn't be changed.

The Soccer Ball is an Other Item.

Named the Telstar, this iconic football was the official inflatable orb of the 1970 World Cup in Mexico. Consisting of 12 black pentagons and 20 white hexagons, the Telstar was designed to be more visible during black and white television broadcasts, even though hot pink and glitter would've stood out more. Nobody is quite sure why this football is so popular in Argentina, especially as 1970 was the only year they failed to qualify for the World Cup. One theory posits that the ball is often deflated and used as a makeshift toilet to disrespect the tournament's eventual winner and Argentina's hated neighbour, Brazil.

Idk but

i do think it’s funny that you’ll get made fun of by British people calling it soccer when they literally made the word up.

Bennett [2671454]

While I agree the sport is called football.

I think it's funny that it was English people who made the word soccer:

The word "soccer" was invented in the 1880s by English university students, specifically at Oxford and Cambridge. They took the "soc" from social/association football and added the "-er" suffix, a slang trend of the era that also turned rugby football into "rugger".

Just a fun little fact.

Bennett [2671454]

I mean I get it, but some of the greatest minds to exist (JRR Tolkien, Tim Berners-Lee, Issac Newton, Charles Darwin, Alan Turning etc) came from those universities, a lot of posh twats come from there too though. So while I agree I do think you shouldn't tar all with the same brush.

LiLJimmy525 [3186177]

fair enough xd. I've heard of "ruggers" before.

football (the american one) has an odd name in my opinion. correct me if i'm wrong, but they spend more time carrying the ball then kicking it.

WeHaveWays [2163308]

The British had to come up with Soccer because the Americans, who as we all know are the best and brightest people in the whole world call a game where they throw the ball with their hands, football.

In fairness, Cambridge and Oxford students are about as alien to your average working class football fan as the American's are. We don't claim them.

Exactly this.

They can make up new words all they like over there, doesn't matter.

It is the people's sport and the people call it football :)

Shenzi [2410113]

Modern association football originated in England in the mid-19th century, specifically with the formation of The Football Association in 1863, which standardized the rules and separated it from rugby.

Its football not soccer you deserve to be bullied

Mr-Chuckles [2868555]

Like just about every sport we invented, the British are terrible at football.

So it really doesnt matter!

But not as terrible as America even after their president wangled a decision change!!

Mr-Chuckles [2868555]

We gotta be honest in all directions!

If we cant laugh at ourselves, how can we begin to laugh at America with such heartfelt glee?

It's simple, the educated in the UK will do anything to not be seen as common and the common will do anything to not be seen as educated.

A fun thing about the English language is one thing can have multiple names.
