If you're open to international, my vote goes to Kyoto, Japan 🇯🇵
One reason? The perfect mix of history, food, and peaceful temples. You can spend the morning wandering through centuries-old shrines, grab incredible ramen or sushi for lunch, and end the day in a cozy izakaya. If you catch cherry blossom or autumn foliage season, it's absolutely magical.
Since you're flying from Chicago, I'd make it a 7–10 day trip rather than a quick getaway. Kyoto also pairs really well with Osaka (amazing street food) or Nara (where friendly deer casually roam the parks). It's one of those destinations that somehow feels relaxing and exciting at the same time.
I'd suggest Kyoto + Osaka (8 days). It's a great first trip to Japan—easy to navigate, safe for solo travelers, and packed with culture and amazing food.
Day 1: Fly from Chicago → Osaka (KIX), take the train to Kyoto, check in, and enjoy a quiet evening walk through Gion, Kyoto's historic geisha district.
Day 2: Visit Fushimi Inari Shrine early to beat the crowds, explore the sake district, and finish with sunset at Kiyomizu-dera.
Day 3: Explore the Arashiyama Bamboo Grove, cross the Togetsukyo Bridge, and visit the monkey park if you're up for a short hike.
Day 4: Spend the morning at Kinkaku-ji (Golden Pavilion), then relax in Nishiki Market trying local specialties like matcha sweets, yakitori, and fresh seafood.
Day 5: Take a 45-minute train to Nara. Feed the famous deer, visit Todai-ji Temple, then continue to Osaka for the evening.
Day 6: Explore Osaka Castle, wander through Dotonbori, and eat your way through the city's legendary street food—takoyaki, okonomiyaki, and kushikatsu.
Day 7: Choose your adventure: Universal Studios Japan, a day trip to Kobe, or simply enjoy Osaka's cafe and shopping scene.
Day 8: Last-minute souvenir shopping before heading back to Kansai Airport for your flight home.
Get an IC card (ICOCA) for trains and convenience stores, carry a small amount of cash for smaller shops, and don't overpack your schedule. Japan is one of those places where wandering side streets often becomes the highlight of the trip.
Trust me—Kyoto isn't a destination you "check off." It's a place you'll already be planning to revisit before your flight home. 🇯🇵✈️
