I've never really told this story publicly because I know how it sounds and I'm not trying to convince anyone that ghosts are real. I still question parts of it myself. Maybe there was a logical explanation for everything that happened. Maybe there wasn't. All I know is what my friends and I experienced that night.
This happened about four years ago.
There was an abandoned psychiatric hospital a couple of hours away from where we lived. It had been closed for years after most of the buildings had fallen into disrepair. Like every abandoned place it had stories attached to it. People claimed they heard screaming coming from empty wards at night. Others said they saw someone standing in the upper windows even though the floors were unsafe and impossible to reach. We laughed at all of it.
There were four of us. We weren't ghost hunters or anything like that. Just bored idiots with flashlights and cameras looking for something creepy to do.
Getting inside was surprisingly easy. A section of the fence had been pushed over and one of the rear doors had already been forced open. The first thing that hit us wasn't fear. It was the smell. Damp concrete old wood mould and something metallic that I still can't describe.
The silence was strange too.
Not normal silence.
Even with four people walking around it felt like the building was swallowing every sound. Our footsteps echoed but only for a second before everything went quiet again.
Most of the rooms were exactly what you'd expect. Rusty bed frames broken windows peeling paint and graffiti covering almost every wall. We joked around for the first twenty minutes making stupid comments and trying to scare each other.
Then things slowly started changing.
One of my mates kept saying he felt like someone was following us. We all laughed because he was usually the first one to get nervous. Every time we'd stop walking he'd turn around expecting someone to be behind us.
Nobody ever was.
When we reached what looked like the old isolation wing the atmosphere felt completely different. The air suddenly became freezing cold. Not just cooler. Cold enough that you could actually see your breath.
It made no sense because every window in that hallway had been boarded up.
That's when one of our flashlights died.
Fresh batteries.
Then another one started flickering.
We blamed cheap batteries and kept going.
At the very end of the corridor there was an old wheelchair sitting against the wall.
We all noticed it because it looked strangely clean compared to everything else around it. Less dust than anything nearby.
One of the boys joked that whoever moved it last forgot to take it with them.
None of us touched it.
We continued into another room for maybe five minutes looking around.
When we came back...
The wheelchair wasn't there anymore.
I know exactly where it had been because we'd all stopped to look at it.
We searched the hallway thinking one of the others was messing with us but nobody admitted moving it and there wasn't anywhere nearby to hide something that size without making a lot of noise.
That was the first moment we all stopped laughing.
We decided to head upstairs before leaving.
Halfway up the staircase we heard what sounded like a heavy metal door slam somewhere below us.
Hard.
Loud enough that the whole building seemed to shake.
We all froze.
One of us called out asking if someone else was inside.
Nothing.
Not a single reply.
A minute later we heard footsteps.
Slow.
One step every few seconds.
Coming from downstairs.
They weren't running.
They weren't sneaking.
Just steady footsteps getting closer.
We all shined our lights down the stairwell expecting security or another group exploring.
There was nobody there.
The footsteps stopped the second we pointed our lights down.
That was enough for two of the boys who wanted to leave immediately.
The rest of us agreed.
As we were making our way back toward the exit I had this overwhelming feeling that someone was walking directly behind me.
You know when someone is standing just a little too close.
That feeling.
I turned around so fast I nearly fell over.
Nothing.
But one of my mates looked at me and said
Did you hear someone whisper
I hadn't.
Until he mentioned it.
A second later I heard what sounded like someone quietly saying hey from somewhere behind us.
Not shouting.
Not echoing.
Just a quiet voice.
We all heard it.
Every single one of us.
Nobody spoke for about ten seconds.
Then we walked out.
Not ran.
Walked.
I think we were all trying not to panic.
When we finally got back to the car we checked the time.
We'd only been inside for about an hour.
It honestly felt like we'd been there for three or four.
Nobody talked much on the drive home.
The weirdest part came the next day.
Going through the photos there was nothing dramatic.
No ghost faces.
No shadow figures.
Nothing like that.
Except for one photo.
It was taken down the isolation hallway where we'd seen the wheelchair.
At the end of the corridor there was what looked like someone standing just around the corner.
Only half of their shoulder and head were visible.
At first we assumed it was one of us.
But after checking everyone's clothes and where each person was standing when the photo was taken...
It couldn't have been.
The shape was too tall and wearing something completely different.
I've still got that photo somewhere on an old hard drive.
I've never edited it and I've never posted it because honestly it's not clear enough to prove anything.
Maybe someone else really was in that building.
Maybe we let our imaginations get carried away after hearing all the stories.
Or maybe there are places where the past doesn't quite stay in the past.
I still don't know.
What I do know is that none of us have ever gone exploring abandoned hospitals again.
Believe it or don't.
If someone offered me a million dollars to spend another night in that place...
I'd still say no.
