Been thinking about the methods organisms use on earth to communicate. Sounds mostly, pheromones, behaviours, colors, fluorescence etc. Now sound went up with the evolution cause we live in a world of obstructions sounds can bend aorund but in space, or even a flat surfaced planet, wouldn’t light be the preferred medium?
I think that will depend on the environmental conditions. Since light is much faster than sound and does not need a medium to transmit through (in a vacuum), this might be a good option for light in the vacuum of space. However, if you were to have a thick, dense atmosphere (i.e., dust, heavy cloud cover) then there are certainly many ways in which sound may be able to travel better than light; or possibly even better than any form of signal using chemicals. As far as a race of intelligent beings who communicate over large distances in open space go, I would guess they use some form of electromagnetic energy - using either visual light, lasers, etc. to communicate with each other. So, evolution always selects that mode of communication which can best convey information within their particular environment; therefore, I do not believe that there is one 'optimal' means by which to communicate
Doesn't gravity "travel" faster than light. I think that would be best.
No it doesn't, it's the effect of the bending of space time and it propagates at light speed.

Something like only 20% of human communication is verbal, the other 80% is composed of body language. Then you can also consider things like what you wear to communicate wealth and culture, and how you physically look to communicate healthy genes
