This is not showing you your addiction level.

It is showing you how much of an employment penalty you have BECAUSE of your addiction.

It only updates once per day, after 18:00 TCT when all of the companies have their daily profits and stock levels calculated, before you get your wages/workstats.

Just like the brain icon (when you get it) isn't showing your addiction level either, it is showing how much of a penalty to your battle stats you have as a result of your addiction.

It may not show anything, because OP was wrong.

I'm guessing your faction changed perks due to your current ranked war.

Or they have added +1 nerve, but you lost 5 from your natural nerve bar from the critical failures during beer day where you were trying to level up crimes that are too hard for you.

You halved your pickpocket, and you lost more shoplifting than you gained - your natural nerve bar (NNB) goes up and down in increments of 5. Complete successful crimes and build up your total Crime Experience (CE) = your NNB will grow. Critically fail crimes and lose your CE = your NNB can reduce again.

This is why the advice is not to rush ahead to crimes that are too hard for you, and spend more time levelling up the first few crimes and progress to higher ones as you max them. The higher your total CE, the easier the harder crimes are.

Successful crime (green) = you improved your CE from the success

Normal fail (yellow) = you just wasted the nerve which COULD have got you more CE

Critical fail (red) = you just lost up to 20 times as much CE as you would have got if it was successful, and also lose levels (or progress towards levels) in that specific crime

Only once a day, and not very accurately - the same amount of addiction gives different penalties based on the position and your workstats.

(It also changes depending on perks and faction bonuses - it isn't about how much addiction you have, it is purely about how the amount of addiction you have is affecting you - if nothing about you or your faction or your job changes, then you can use it to see that your addiction is going up or down compared to that same single point in time 24 hours earlier, and that for JUST YOUR SITUATION how many drugs you can take how often before you need to rehab to not annoy the director for having a big penalty)
