Edit 2: more good responses from JL0ve and RyanS96. I got the idea, I should quit the game, kill myself, etc etc. y'all can stop replying now.

Edit: before you start going "boo hoo try harder" like the majority of the responses, read the post: I am asking how we got matched with them, not why we lost. Also read the excellent reply from Spidernnam as well as my own response to it. I know why we lost, I knew we were going to lose long before the war started. Again, I'm asking how we got matched, considering an ELO-based matchmaker hopefully should have avoided something like this given each side's war history.

new matchmaker gets released, immediately get served the most crushing, lopsided defeat in our faction's history. someone who is smarter than me please explain how we got matched with these guys

You outstat their top for 10 times (1.1b vs 99m) and you tell me it's poorly matched?

Turtle your low end with 200k bounties, you hosp and suppress the 99m and 98m guy to take control, your 42m guy hosp the 41m and 26m guy, everyone else turtle and come out only when they have good targets to hit.

TWC-Commander [2180078] Wiki Contributor

that's a good strategy in theory but what ended up happening was that we got activity diffed so hard that they had 10 guys online at one time group attacking me. can't suppress the ~100m statters if I can't hit them while they're hitting me

i say it's an unfair matchup because our faction has substantially less wins that losses and should have a pretty atrocious elo, while the other faction has never lost a war, which might mean that this was meant to be a pity-win for the other side (which they evidently don't need anyway considering they're on like a 5-war winstreak)

There’sa few things you can do.

  1. Get the members of your faction to login to the game.
  2. Get them to use their energy to make attacks when they are online.
  3. When they are going offline, get them to fly or self hospitalise to avoid bleeding easy points.

What a shame you didn’t have a hitter with 10x the stats of the biggest player on the opposing factions side to dominate the board in Torn.

Certified skill activity diff.

To be fair, we weren't entirely happy with the matchup as well, seeing as we're 2 ranks higher and didn't get promoted to gold.

After some discussions with Pedro earlier this week, keeping up to date with the matchmaking update thread, and some guess work - I'm fairly certain the matchup happened because both of our factions doesn't have enough wars to have an accurate performance measurement yet, so stats played a bigger role. Based on stats (median and average) this was a very balanced war.

TWI vs TWC

Avg: 14m vs 82m

Median: 800k vs 440k

Unfortunately, we don't care about what stats says. Our war against Leave my elevator alone (who outstats you even, and who's top 3 + few other members did put in great effort), was conceded after a couple of hours. Not to sound cocky, but we aren't your ordinary faction, the system is likely still figuring out what to do with us.

Separate note, we left them in bronze, but they got promoted to gold without warring again due to the new system while we are still stuck in silver, fun!

I mean we're vampires, but mosquitos suck blood as well I guess

To sum up, the matchmaking system doesn't look at activity, but maybe it should? Both of our performance needs time to be measured, so the only thing the system looks at is stats which were fairly even.

You did great yourself, wasting our E by intentionally losing to BodyBagger while we jump you, but no one else even logged in to help you

edit: To comment on some replies above, they did bounty their own members on numerous occasions, and OP did come through and wipe our team as much as they could. We just made sure to keep our med cd healthy and not to leave any healthy targets for more than a minute

thanks for the detailed response spider, your side played near-optimally (i personally think it was optimal but your co-leader has some suggestions for improvement) and watching you fight was like viewing a masterpiece unfold before my eyes

i think most people replying are missing the point of the post; i'm not bitching about the loss. i know my faction well, i knew we were going to lose, hell, i told your co-leader that we were going to get clobbered within an hour of matchup coming out. i'm more surprised that a matchup like this was able to happen given that the new matchmaker is supposed to be ELO-based, and my faction is very good at one thing and that one thing is losing ranked wars, whereas yours (our opponent's) has done nothing but win

the fact that my side sits on their ass and doesn't do anything should be factored into our ELO already, given that we've won a total of one out of our last seven wars (prior to this most recent one) :P so in that sense i'm bitching about the matchmaker

i suppose such a young faction with so few wars and a horrifying winstreak is a prickly and unhandled edge case. i look forward to seeing you reach platinum

JL0ve [3680590]

Flippant comments aside, the new matching system will take time to bed in.

Observationally what I’ve seen is that factions with similar makeups to yours, where you have 1 or a small handful of hitters, then a “long tail” of low stat players are the ones that the new algorithm is struggling the most to place and I guess that’s the weighting between Stats and ELO that has been implemented and might need to be tweaked on the coming weeks.

On paper, it looked like an even war, a solid but relatively underpowered faction with decent tactics and teamwork up against a faction that outstats them signficantly.

Had you been able to sit an dominate in Torn, then your smalls could have gone and built war winning chains whilst keeping them suppressed, however as you pointed out you don’t yet have the ability as a faction to do that.

Over time you’ll find the right level in the new order as will your opponents who it sounds like fought a great fight and deserve the kudos for their win.

Bitch_Pudding [3310523]

sounds like you need to pull out the boot and kick people not willing to participate in wars. thats the problem with new factions and cache farms. you depend on your top end to win matches. its better to have 10 active players than it is to have 50 people who arent going to even bother turtling. rw was never ment for you to win by doing nothing. your people actually need to do something to win. the system assumed youd have activity on your side. but you didnt, so you lost.

Mong [3401450]

Saying you're gonna lose from the off, what kinda strategy is that? Not gonna motivate troops that's way.

We beat jux who out stat us in every way and have 10m more respect than us. Took 4 days but we did it.

Never once did management say we're gonna lose.

That's sad man

RyanS96 [2169567]

It definitely shouldn't factor in activity. Someone choosing whether to play the game or not does not influence whether they could have. The system is about creating potentially fair matchups, not rewarding lazy people for being lazy.

As someone who runs a faction based on activity, activity only gets you so far. Stats are by far a bigger advantage to have over someone and anyone who loses due to activity despite having more stats absolutely deserves to lose.

Wanna win? Play the game.

PS: I know you won, but you are being far too generous towards your opponent. They deserved to get smoked and they deserve for the same to happen again if they show up like that in future wars, too.

RyanS96 [2169567]

You asked for an explanation so I will give one. Your performance rating is capped both in how high and how low it can go compared to your stats. This is to stop exactly what your faction is doing - barely playing the game and trying to capitalise on the ranked warring system anyway. You were matched with them because your minimum performance rating is as high as their actual performance rating. You either need to change or buckle up for a bad timer, because this likely won't be a one-time occurrence.

SneipLadd [2813921]

If your faction dont want to war, dont enlist to war.

Crazy to complain that you meet factions that want to war in a ranked war.

Trailblazer [2926943]

the fact that my side sits on their ass and doesn't do anything

That is, what the kids call, a leadership issue. If you war and people don't show up, give them the axe. The least they can do to earn their perks is RW and if they can't even do that they should be going elsewhere. You should also be prodding them and making orders to actually do things, RWing really isn't that hard in the grand scheme of things especially anything below Gold. That or simply don't enlist and solve the problem entirely.

Elzeothis [2961389]

As a proud leader of a faction that consistently punches up with activity and strategies, I beg to differ with your opening statement. An inactive player is a liability at 20k or 20b.

However we can all clearly see the common denominator in this factions war history is them not showing up in any sense of the word.

Hope you're enjoying your free loot, if pixel cash is more important than your pride than less power to you, OP.
