Fake walls are a farcical mechanic. It spams ED and locks up terts for no mechanically or thematically justifiable reason.

Ched would probably point out it's hard to fix because he can't force factions to fight eachother. But if TT walls did not provide ED and the walls could be assailed by multiple parties (one unified wall), where the 'sides' could choose which faction they can attribute their ownership points to, it would be possible to break fake walling.

As to the big alliance issue, it's a rediculously pervasive issue. Almost any mechanical change to add competitiveness is solvable by alliances brokering deals. This actually occurs IRL (see: Security Communities) and is hard to break without damaging trust between partners.

Constraints around movement is a good idea, the only issue is that it limits just map movement. Alliances can still take hostile actions as a group, in other domains of activity. Especially if the field was opened to more contrarian mechsnics.

What Torn needs is to find ways of setting faction objectives so that they cannot communally profit at large scale. Making territories necessary and difficult or impossible to share would really cut into that. As would disrupting RW copperation, and adding scope for individuals to pursue vendettas.

So I actually have good points for both arguments here!

As for teaming up to take land : https://www.torn.com/newspaper.php#!/articles/2884

The faction was un-aligned, sat on YABA land, yet still ended up with TRC, ESC and other notable factions still in YABA in my DM’s. Ended up speaking to YABA leadership myself afterwards about joining, yet someone VETO’d it in place of bringing in the faction we assault.

and foreign territories : https://www.torn.com/forums.php#/p=threads&f=4&t=16564670&b=0&a=0

The problem is there is no "need" for some to fight, so we need to create that need:

  • make a single "king territory" in the middle of the map. Whoever occupies it owns the server. Whoever owns it can do some special things that affect everyone. Hope they don't anger the server and have everyone want to fight them ;)
  • More territored would be fun. How many factions are on the server? What percentage has a territory? In real life even small gangs own a street
  • Plunder someone's racket instantly yielding some profit? Perhaps these raids can be a bit fast so the territory holders needs to be vigilant.... Or take revenge
Beerstein [1322136]

and probably 90% of those don't and will never have land before and after any such changes. They just want to poke at others and say "fight". Yet this is a suggestion in the MUCH more popular GD that doesn't  have the upvotes even if it were in suggestions.

The reality is still that map reset would just be 1-2 days of people shuffling their way back to the same spots they were already on like a little maze of marching ants across the map.

I'm totally fine with change, but nothing there really addresses root causes and wouldn't actually change anything.

[people will just go back to their old territories]

that's definitely the worry with a reset, but I'm less convinced than I was about that, especially if there's enough initial chaos. A territory reset planned long in advance would most likely have that issue, and one with absolutely no warning might too. I quite like the idea of DBs having a % chance of resetting the map, did anyone mention that?

Beerstein [1322136]

Cesium from OCs not going as planned? xD All these new bombs and so few new explosions.

Too many people running metrics across torn tracking awards when bombs are dropped, networth shifts. You know, if you removed DB/Cesium "value" and allowed the merits to trickle in over a period of 6 months, more might anon drop.

I honestly think it'd still be a shuffle back to territories no matter how it's done, but DB resets would be annoying for the facs that had territories hit. Probably neighbors would throw em a bone and give em 1 plot with no bonus to wait it out.

All that said THIS is the root issue and organized groups that large wont crumble over a few resets here and there.

Maybe some new alliance could try going after a smaller group like JFK or NWA, but they can already try that, they just aren't.

Yes, I agree.

The thing with alliances being the issue is why I gave it a rainbow name. There is absolutely no way that a tert reset alone breaks up the power of alliances  and neither can any other specific solution. Because the alliance system is a general solution, and almost all of its main actors are trustworthy in this system.

But there are two reasons why a territory reset should be done anyway.

(1) Even without any further changes, the effort of regaining territories is still effort. And one that the major factions, with many of their ages being in in the 30s and 40s these days, have no reason amd limited bandwidth to pursue. With changes to TT claims and TT fighting, those challenges mount up and make bids for action more viable. TL;DR something is better than nothing, even if it's just a 3 week walk back to where we are now.

(2) Torn needs to change a lot to 'solve' its paralysis issue. There are no changes that can be made to specific mechanics that alone ever solve the problem. What cyclical territory resets do is remove one major pillar of stability (out of the many that keeps up the alliances). Without removing pillars of stability, nothing happens. This is just the easiest one do, and ensures that when other pillars of stability fall, the reset marks an occasion where new instability can be maximised and exploited.

As to karma being shite, ye. But the polling shows 70%+ of Torn wants these resets, and the raw number of supporters is well over 250.

Could make walls sticky maybe?

Factions choose who to commit where, and they cant assist at another active wall until their wall is finished.

This is partially what I wanted to achieve with the foreign territories in a roundabout way (factions have to commit players to defend territories), and would be a good addition to it actually.

Remove early discharge and allow fore several factions attaching the same spot at a time ! (Or some other way off stopping fake walls)

tbh, the recent DB update is terrible for territory warring. You can no longer use a DB to try to gain a tactical advantage in a war. You would end up simply irradiating the territories you wanted to take. Additionally, if you were to take territories from an opponent not using a DB, the opponent could just DB the area you took making it uninhabitable and removing the rackets.  The DB update was great for trolls and angry people, but was unhelpful for strategic gameplay.

Most of you don't know the depth of the negotiations on how the map is carved up. The alliances involved aren't just going to reset all of that on a whim. It is far more likely the mega-alliances would work together to bring the map back to where it was before the reset.  Sure, some wanker faction may be able to rush to the island before everyone else and say that they won't move, but after being attacked on every side, raided by 20 factions, their members poached, and suggestions of long term negative effects, they will move. I guess all of that creates some activity in the game, but if everything just goes back to where it was, the whole exercise will have just been an annoyance to the players. Additionally, the map will revert quicker after each successive reset because players will know the outcome. For a reset to have any chance of shaking things up, you will first have to implement changes that discourage mega-alliances.

DarthRevan [2836054] Reporter

So tldr is

HoF & all other factions alike want competitiveness and wars

but if someone tries they get raided and poached from.

Best way to sort mega alliances is to fed everyone… because simply due to how international and in game maps work, people will band together. NATO. The British empire, North Korea/china/russia, the EU. Go back through history.

Look at Eve, look at WoW, look at any major competitive MMO, there are guild systems which work together to control areas. If the developers of EVE turned around and said that guilds working together was now illegal, the entire economy would collapse.

Countries working together > countries standing alone. Factions working together > factions working alone

Penicillin [1517799] Committee Committee

You are correct in that humans are hard-wired to work together for common defense. Cavemen did it, and everyone since. Even if you broke the mega-alliances, regional alliances would emerge. However, wouldn't that be better? A few factions working together to defend an area in sector 6 sounds like a lot better gameplay than three mega-alliances controlling the whole map.

That’s more likely to happen if yearly resets happen.

One year people may want to fight with X, then Y the year after, then say fuck it let’s fight Z the year after.

With no reset stagnation happen(ed) and now we’re having this talk every other month
