TestPedroDev [3613560] Announcement Quote

Citizens,

We have made the following small tweak to the new Ranked War ranking system, ahead of larger upcoming changes.

Nota bene: the matchmaking code is unchanged by these changes. These changes affect rank only.

First: we will degrade the rank of factions with very low performance scores. Factions have low performance scores when they perform well below the level we'd expect from the stats of their constituent players. The vast majority of factions will not be affected by this change, or will see a very modest improvement in their rank as a result.

Secondly: we are changing how we calculate the size of Diamond, so that 10% becomes the ceiling on Diamond's size rather than its guaranteed size. Assuming ~1,800 ranked factions, previously we filled Diamond to 180 by taking the highest-rated factions with ≥75 members, digging below the top 180 when necessary. Now, to qualify for Diamond, you must both be one of the top 180 factions (by rating) and have ≥75 members. We will calculate everyone's rank as if we didn't have a member requirement for Diamond, and then dump factions affected by the member requirement into Plat III.

These two changes stack.

18% of factions will have their hidden/true division affected by these combined changes. 9% will gain a division, 6% will lose a division, 2% will lose two divisions, and 1% will lose more divisions. As these affect hidden/true divisions, most factions will not notice the change immediately, or will never know they were affected.

tldr; Diamond is getting a little smaller, Platinum III is getting a little larger, factions who lose all their wars will have their rank penalized.

Post-change rank map, Y = performance (log), X = faction strength (log)

Most winners (green) are near division boundaries, most losers (red) have low performance. X denotes factions affected by Diamond membership size requirement

Division membership count if all factions were at their "true" division, post changes (line = before, fill = after)

Per-division strength ratings, (line = before, fill = after)

Number of factions by divisions changed after changes

These changes have already been rolled out. Factions who have been strongly affected by these changes will either see a one-off rank adjustment during the next matchmaking period, or will see gradual drift over time in alignment with the existing promotion/demotion rules, depending on the specifics of how and why they're affected.

Diamond is getting a little smaller, Platinum III is getting a little larger

Today we learned Perdos definition of small is not the same as most.. This brings up more questions than answers...

It also looks like the average stats in Platinum factions are higher than Diamond 2? Am I reading this right?

I think Diamond was far too big after the last update and am for downsizing it for sure.

Holy crap...

You'd think they'd flatten them a bit so there's less P3s and more spread but oh well, people will be happy with their plat 3 rewards I suppose.

Devil ammunition though?

That aint a couple x's that's a whole metric fuckton of x's, maybe part of why platinum 3 is just fucking massive with massive stats now wait that brings up another question "Per-division strength ratings, (line = before, fill = after)"

We talking average or median stats here? Or is this strength rating tingymafuck that calculates? You know, this thingy

In any case, that's a lot of x's which I assume will equate to the number of tears D3vl drops in the next week.

Beerstein [1322136]

Thinking about it a min the platinum 3 thing being weird, it kinda acts like in some other games as a whole different class.

Thinking part 3 is like master with diamond grandmaster with limited spots and individual rankings.. That'd at least visually make more sense than a blob at P3 if not flattening out the ranks some.

Would also be a cool visual of where you're placed among all diamonds even though it is in HoF.

Jokar [84976]

TIL that diamond is top 180.

Haven't been up to date with the discussions but that feels huge.

Would have thought that would have been limited to like top 50 factions or something.

Top 180 seems like anyone that plays torn somewhat seriously rather than the 'Top tier' .

To put it into perspective, diamond requires 75 players.

That means 180*75= Top 13,500 players. Not exactly high end.

Beerstein [1322136]

175 now. But yeah, if you take top 175 respect factions you'll see how rapidly it degrades. By 175 it's basically just people no one has heard of.

At this point, why don't we just throw every single faction into plat 3?
How can anyone look at that graph and not seen the giant elephant in the room?
It is completely obvious to everyone that the member requirement for only diamond and no other rank is creating an issue.
Plat 3 is the place to be if you want to abuse the shit out of the broken matchmaking and reward system.

Vincent [1577779]

Was also thinking if Plat ranks should have 1 OR more member requirements.

Plat 25+

Plat 1 25+

Plat 2 50+

Plat 3 75+

Just a general thought at first glance though.. have not thought in depth about it.

IndyCision [2597200]

That graph had the stat range, the centre of that bar will not be the "average" stats of all members in there.

It takes into account the massive stat factions with sub 75 members who are locked into Plat3 as a result.

The majority of the factions will be down near the bottom of that range.

RyanS96 [2169567]

"Locked" is doing some heavy lifting there. A lot of those faction intentionally prune their member counts to keep themselves down there. Most aren't locked there at all, they choose to be there because the game design actively allows and encourages them to benefit by keeping themselves there.

Plat 3 is no longer a division determined through faction strength at all. All it is now is a count of all of the average or above factions with sub 75 members. The difference between the worst Plat 3 faction and the strongest Plat 3 faction is the same different as a Silver 2 faction and a Plat 2 faction. It is silly.

MUZZA [2440298]

Don’t really understand the change. How do you determine performance with stats?

is that a general baseline of other factions, or what you would expect from these factions?

WinterValor [3945658]

Now, to qualify for Diamond, you must both be one of the top 180 factions (by rating) and have ≥75 members.

Hypothetical question, if all factions that are in top 180 (by rating) drop down to <75 members, there will be 0 diamond factions? (assuming those factions will still have enough stats to take up a space in the top 180 with <75 members)

Matty_h [48911]

In the old system yeah I agree

However in the new system if you match on hidden Elo and not hidden/true rank then holding in P3 when you can actually throw down in Diamond is only hurting yourself.

If that’s still the way the new matchmaking works then I don’t see an issue with the spike of P3 factions, it’s the hate they’ve got to break through for Diamond rewards

Kamikaze-Tool [2035028] Committee Committee

Will remind you that this doesn't impact matchmaking.  Which means it basically impacts rewards & optics for a faction.  Thats it.
