I found this to be awesome, but not sure if it actually is. I told my wife and she seemed to not care. So anyway using a bunch of smarts and technology and programming and stuff these German guys programmed our beloved childhood Mario to be self aware within a game. He actually learns and can seek out coins, kill enemies and complete a level without getting hurt. There are videos of him running through levels but this is the one that kind of explains everything. Even though I understand very little of it I find it fascinating. It's also a bit scary that an overweight cartoon plumber is smarter than some Torn players.

It seems he learns what makes him fail and what makes him succeed. Instead of having a premade map that tells him what to do and when, he seems to learn how to play the game and run trough the levels with ease after a few tries.

It's not huge, but it's a great start when it somes to self-learning algorithms. I'm looking forward to seeing more of this.

I'll be the first to admit I am completely ignorant of any kind of programming (well except for a few semesters of visual basic I took in high school and have since forgot) but it seemed to me that Mario was actually taking notice of things and learning. I didn't follow the whole explanation but it seemed to me that Mario legitimately learned from what happened to him. The explanations did confuse my feeble mind a bit but it seemed to be pretty legit.
