I have it on good authority the money from the one donor pack you used in your two years playing has indeed gone towards server expenses. - Chedburn [1] Admin

We already use AWS EC2 and Glacier, and in fact NewRelic for monitoring. I don't see how you can make recommendations to solve a lag spike that we haven't even investigated yet.

More load balancers - clearly.
I'm pretty sure he doesn't host them. Whatever was happening appears to be fixed. Flying for me now.
The irony of having no DP wasn't missed.
I keep getting timeout errors saying that the server didn't respond in time.. Ironically it stopped after I posted this thread...
Let me tell you, in the 10 years I've played this game, There has only been a hand full of major down times. And only one major crash. Ched does host his own servers. I remember in the past having down times, allowing him to upgrade the hardware. I find it a surprise when the servers is down or slow. He's kept this this place running pretty well for the last decade.
I'm not disputing this game's past performance at all. All I'm saying is it seems to be happening more often lately, and when you're on a mobile device that takes forever to tell you that there happens to be a gateway error, and it happens repeatedly over a few hours, it tends to be a deterrent.. And I don't think I'm alone when I say I don't want to be deterred from this game. Just let us know when you're starting your update, so we know when we can play uninterrupted please.
That doesn't mean that I haven't. I just don't continuously pour money into it like some.

Well I'm certain that is the reason it stopped happening... it's all you.
Exactly as OP wrote in his title.
WE NEED MORE HORSEPOWER CHED!
Nah just kidding! OP's fixed it with his philanthropic ways!
First I'm hearing of any lag on Torn - but looking at the graphs something was happening last night.

Or mysql/mongo/http backups, nightly crons, purging scripts... The processes which have very high load and are run during periods of low activity to avoid issues. I've never heard of lag on Torn being caused by the amount of people online - it's always to do with other complicated but vital processes.

the most likely answer is probably something along the lines of something not running correctly in the background, right?
but i like to imagine it was an amateur DDoS that was squashed before it really even became as issue.
i definitely got some pretty harsh lag on mobile as did some faction mates, but we dealt with it and got over it.
That's what happens when Ched forgets to feed the hamsters []
i think we are gonna get a fair few spikes as people use API, without realising how many requests per minute they are making
