So we couldn't find a winner via the 5minute last post rule for 6 hours, it didn't look like it would ever end. Left it going until 22:00 TCT and instead of spamming Torn more decided we will do a draw instead using all the posts in the thread.
Each post = 1 entry. The post had to be valid as per the original rules (ie. no more than 1 post per time period at that time) - any invalid posts were not counted.
The results of the draw plus the full entrant list can be found here:
I am just verifying the win but I believe Fexalan [2130109] has won on page 217 going through to 218. The post has exactly 30 seconds between it and the next one. I will verify first though if anyone else won before them! If all is good then I will organise to send them the 1.7b via trade sometime over the next 24hours (to avoid muggings).
Rules:
- If your post is the last post for 30seconds you win the whole pot. (See below for winning scenarios since this needs to be clear!) - Each post is 500k added to the pot (Note: You do not pay for a post the pot comes from my own money, don't send it :P) - You can only post once per page - Pot will be verified and calculated from the post count - duplicates will be counted as it's not a big deal, do not worry about keeping count in your own posts but feel free to do so for a 'general idea' :)
I'll be randomly dropping the time requirement til a winner is found. If I post then anyone on that page before me can post again (although the last poster before mine still counts as latest post until someone else does) - this is to just try and make it fair so my own bump's don't mess up your win.
I will verify the winner. I won't be online 100% of the time so it's possible someone wins in that time period. If you believe you have won message me and I'll verify.
Pot starts at $200m
Maximum Pot is $1,700,000,000.
Winner will receive the full amount of the pot, if they promised money to others and do end up winning they must distribute it. Therefore be sure you can trust them :)
We have a first winner: Nathan2005 - $216m. Was too quick though IMO so lets keep this going :)
Winning Scenarios
Given a time of 30 seconds: User A posts at 12:00:00, User B posts at 12:00:29, User B is now the last poster and user A has not won. User A posts at 12:00:00, User B posts at 12:00:30, User A has now won.
Other Info
I have done this before so if you think that it's not possible to win please see:
Simple game while I work on some puzzle games I got coming along.
Rules
1. You can post as many times as you like. 2. 1 post = 500k added to the total pot 2. The maximum pot is 1 billion 3. On Thursday 16th of April at 12:00:00 TCT (that is when the clock on torn shows that time - eg midday not midnight) the person that posts closest to that time WITHOUT going over the time (eg. 12:00:01) wins the entire pot*. If multiple winners (eg. all posting on the same second) it will be shared among them. 4. The pot does not change after the winner has been decided.
Prize
You can find the current prize total by going to the thread listing and multiplying the reply count by 500k (obvious but you never know :P) and add 250million.
Thanks!
* To clarify, you can go over the time, it's just the post on or after 12:00:01 will not be a winning post.

Under the new wording, and no, I'm not going to make this, but curious as to whether either of these would fall afoul of the new rules or if they even should:
Completely off site prediction markets platform based on data available on the API (not looked in a while to see whats available via the API) but eg. 'Will Xanax reach $900,000 by X?' or any bookies based on Torn events count?
Providing the "offsite nature" is the problem, would such a prediction market run from a forum thread be allowed?
If no to 1, but yes to 2, would such a thread be allowed to make use of imagery from an external source that is actually a video stream, ie. to provide the functionality of 2 but its still "technically in torn"?
Not a casino owner nor someone that uses one, got 8 pages in before commenting, why are so many people comparing this to CS GO or RMT or things like that? As far as I can see theres no real money being exchanged at any point, all just virtual in game currency.
Scamming is already legal in the game (unless that has changed without me knowing ha), nothing really can be provably fair without some trust element, if someone pulls the rug thats that players problem, same way as if you did a paid raffle in game and then just didn't pay out it'd be on the player for trusting that other player.
As in at the end of the day I don't care either way, but also not seeing where the real problem is I guess.
I do wonder if anyone actually opens the cache. The cache itself has to be more valuable than the potential collectible inside it considering the rarity.
Torns bug bounty is goated. I don't think I've seen a company pay out as much as they have for the types of bugs and issues typically found here. They're also very responsive and typically proactive in their approach.
Definitely wish it was around in the early early days though.
Majority of bug bounty programs elsewhere typically try to reduce the payout in various ways or just outright pay very little. The ones that do pay a lot are typically the likes of Google or larger tech companies; and honestly good luck finding problems there.
Can you add a option to de-associate torn URLs from the app or at least a way to get iOS to stop showing the "Open in TornPDA" banner on Safari on every Torn pag?
Best offer in 24 hours received by mail or forum post will receive it via trade (ie. message with a $ amount). Will accept any offer (even if its low ball) providing its the highest offer received.
Not true in reality, the law is only referred to as a cookie law but covers any way of storing tracking ids or other data on a users device across page loads. So local storage etc is also covered. In actuality even storing information in a database and using personally identifying information (which included IP address) to track is covered under GDPR. The only way to avoid a cookie banner is to avoid third parties and storing only functional cookies which you do not need to prompt for (eg. Solely for login session storing or the likes).
You can though unless its changed within the last couple days... You can use the free refills 1 after the other instantly and then pay for a refill with points as usual instantly.
Also having the problem of course, from what I could see on iOS when loading a problematic thread:
Process name: com.apple.WebKit.WebContent
- Process prior to opening the thread would idle around 10-20% CPU usage and 200-300MB memory - Process hit >100% CPU usage and 1.48GB of Memory once thread is opened and rendered - Process crashed for the first time and reloaded the page - Process again hit >100% CPU usage and 1.44GB of Memory - MobileSafari gives up rendering the page and shows the repeated error message
Both crashes causes iOS to show a low memory warning in the activity monitor timeline of instruments.
As hinted in the announcement just moving to the cloud is not necessarily the be all and end all but it sounds like that is being addressed by refactoring the code. If you have a monolith and one that uses pessimistic locking (no idea if this is the case but just an example) then moving to a cloud provider is not magically going to improve everything - it can certainly help but you're probably just going to end up with a ridiculous bill at the end of it and the real problem areas are still going to be bottlenecked by whatever is causing the problem.
As an intermediate band aid I wonder if they've looked into Road Runner, I've noticed in practice almost immediate improvements of response times with comparatively little effort depending on the PHP framework used.
I am curious though, would be interesting to see a write up after the fact if they're willing to, would like to understand the problems exactly and what they've tried. A sort of written retrospective.
Dark mode, but with some tweaks, mainly because in some places it looks like just an inversion of the light mode that throws off some things like indent/bevels. For the most part its good though.
I am in a serious financial crisis and need to sell some of my most prized possessions.
My girlfriend LYNDA is on the market for the right price.
She is an absolute stunner, but i've been with her for a long time now and I think its time for me to move on.
She has never been used and is still in mint condition. She comes with her own custom weapons which are all top of the line, as well as a boat load of high end cash items.
She has an amazing personality and loves to chat, she is very friendly to everyone she meets and will fit into any faction perfectly.
She is a little bit cheeky at times, but thats what I love about her!
If you are interested in purchasing LYNDA please contact me via PM and we can arrange a meeting place where you can have a look at her before purchasing. I hope someone can give her a good home!
Peace out!
And:
I have a confession to make. I am an addict.
I am addicted to forum Karma.
A little back story; I used to be a good player in TORN, I used to be a high level staff member and I used to have a healthy IQ figure. Then something happened...
The addiction took over.
I was always the first person online, posting everything that I could think of that would get me Karma, it was all I thought about and then one day I had an epiphany.
"If you want something done right, do it yourself"
So thats what I did, i started writing every post in the forums, whether it was my own thoughts or not, it didn't matter as long as it got me Karma and people liked what i wrote. It worked.
I'm now at the point where I can write any post in the forums and receive at least 100 up votes from people who think its something they agree with or like reading. My Karma has increased massively from writing all these posts and I am now known as one of the top players in TORN because of my high Karma score.
So my advice to you all is if you want some forum Karma, start writing your own posts and see how many up votes you get from the community, who knows where it could take you!
Peace
Should have really gone with this from the beginning:
Many of you probably had no idea but I am a regular forum poster on the official TORN forums. I am well known for my witty posts and clever responses to other posters. I have been around for years and have a large following of loyal fans who love my posts.
A lot of people are unaware that I actually have a degree in 'Writing' from the University of, well, you know where. I am also a published author of a book titled 'How to be the most liked poster on the official TORN forums' which is currently in its second edition.
I am a very busy man and have many responsibilities in real life, so I don't get to post as much as I would like to.
I have been thinking about starting a new thread on the official forums for some time now, but I just haven't had the time. I am sure that my loyal fans will be happy to hear that I will be starting a new thread soon.
It is going to be titled 'Why you should never trust anyone in TORN' and it will be based on my own personal experiences with people in TORN. It is going to be an eye opener for many people who are unaware of how bad things really are in TORN.
Could only find two but I gave it the following prompt in bold (Along with the examples):
This is a LONG open letter to Chedburn regarding the new Bot Hunter system that detects players that are botting and presents them a captcha:
Dear Chedburn,
I'm writing to you today about the new bot hunter system that is implemented in Torn City. I understand that you have your reasons for wanting to combat bots, but as a player who has been playing Torn City for over two years, I feel like this system needs some work.
First of all, the captcha does not seem to be very good at detecting bots. When I first saw it come up on my screen and clicked on it, nothing happened. I then realized that there was a timer next to the word "correct" and if you don't press the button before time runs out, it says "incorrect." After realizing this was how it worked and waited patiently for the timer to run out (it seemed like an eternity), I pressed the button just in time for it to say "incorrect." This seems ridiculous considering how much time we've had this game - everyone should know by now how these captchas work!Second of all, a lot of players are reporting issues with their internet connection while using Torn City; they're getting kicked off or are having problems loading pages or staying connected.
This is not something new - players have been experiencing these problems since long before this bot hunter system was put into place! This means that players will likely be falsely detected as bots more often than not because they can't load pages quickly enough or stay connected long enough before being booted off their internet. What's worse is when these people come back and start playing again after reconnecting - they'll get kicked out again because they were falsely detected as bots during their previous session!
These false positives are hurting innocent players' experience of our game tremendously. And why? Just so we can claim victory against a few measly little bots? If anything, these false positives hurt us more than them because many people give up trying altogether rather than play in fear of being falsely detected every other day! You want us to get rid of our bots? There's no point if we're going to lose many loyal players
